women's civic leagues in all puns of
the country.
Kulainanoo is a pretty clean town,
but it is going to be the cleanest ever
now that women are the captains of
the "white wings," and the best of it
is they're nut going to stop nt Just a
little street sprinkling and dusting off
a bit, hut they're going to plant trees
and (lowers all over ami have vines
trained lu cover unsightly buildings
and make Utile spots of beauty out of
old back yards and real parks out of
big vacant lots.
The Women's Civic ' Improvement
league, whk-h Is engaged in the work
of cleaning and beautifying Kalamavoo,
was perfected a short time ago, and
during its short existence it hnsiccom
plished what many another league of
long standing has failed to do, says tiie
Brooklyn Kagle. In the very start it
aroused public sentiment, and that is
half the battle. The league was very
popular and grew rapidly until now its
membership reaches 400, and they
come from some of the best and stron
gest organizations of the city. But it
Is not only the club women who are
Interested in this municipal movement.
for many prominent business and pro
fessional men and city otlichtls are also
Identified with it. Among its honorary
members are the mayor nnd the city
couuctlmen. But, while all these men
folk are giving the organization their
moral support and perhaps helping It
on a little bit financially, you must un
derstand that the women are the bosses
nnd that it is through their efforts that
the streets are being kept so spick and
span.
While the women from the best fnm
Hies of the eiry are the leaders of the
league, It Is by no menus a class or
ganlzation. As' an evidence of this a
colored women's organization, known
as the Celery City club, has joined the
civic society. This colored women's
club has been doing work among the
colored population of the town that
has bwn surprising everybody, so when
the present street cleaning movement
was first talked about the colored
women sent In word that they should
be glad to co-operate with the new or
ganization, nnd their services were
readily accepted.
The Women's Civic Improvement
league was organized In a most busi
nesslike in f liner. Knch ward chairman
has as assistants members of a sub
committee of five women. Among the
organizations that comprise the league
are the Ladies' Library association,
the People's Church society, delegates
of the Daughters of the American Itev
olution, Celery City club, Methodist
Pastors' union. Twentieth Century club,
St. Luke's guild. Woman's Christian
Temperance union and the Hebrew
Ladles' Benevolent association.
The leaders of the league believe that
every one in the community should
help in this work of cleaning and beau
tifylng the town, nnd they have there
fore asked the school children to do
all they can in the good cause. Efforts
will be made to have the school
grounds places of beauty. Trees and
plants arc to be set out in the school
yards, and window gardening will be
enrournged. A great deal of work
will also be done a the parks, and
flowers will bToom in all parts of the
town.
But In the meantime sanitary condl
tioDS are not to be neglected. In this
- connection Mrs. Crane, who organized
the league, will prove invaluable, as
her efforts In the line of meat nnd milk
inspection are well known nil over the
ntate of Michigan. She has been so
. successful in her endeavors in this dl-
. reetion tiint she has' had hills passed
lu the state legislature In favor of her
uncthods, and the work has been so
well thought of that It has been taken
up In Indiana and other states. Clean
liness In all things that appertain to
food has been Mrs. Crane's chief con
cern for several years past.
The city council signed n contract
with the Women's Civic Improvement
league for the cleaning of the thor
oughfares in the business section of
Kalamazoo, and the women have had
complete charge of the work. Men nre
kept constantly at work armed with
rn-l. cans, brooms, hoes nnd scrapers.
The dirt Is placed In sacks nnd at the '
end of the day is removed. Once each :
week the streets are thoroughly flush j
cd by the fire department. j
To aid in keeping the highways tidy ,

boxes of bright aluminium color nnd
plainly marked as receptacles for waste
material of nil kinds.
Hound to Grow.
There is a small town in Illinois that'

COSSACKS SWIMMING THEIR HORSES ACROSS A RIVER.
The Cossacks before the beginning of the present war were hailed as
veritable terrors. They have not lived up to their reputation, but they have
had many difficulties as for instance, incompetent leadership to contend
against. It cannot be denied that they are willing, and even swollen rivers
offer no obstacle to these rough riders, as may be seen by the illustration,
Larger Sleeping Car Berths.
One of the few railroad companies
that owns and operates the sleeping
cars in service on Its lines, is the Chi
cago, Milwaukee & St. Paul.
The sleeping cars on this line were
formerly Pullman cars, operated by the
Pullman Company, but for a dozen
years past the railway company has
owned and operated the sleeping car
equipment. In building its sleeping
cars, a departure from the old standard
pattern of cars has been made to the ex
tent of adding about six inches to the
width and height of the sleepers. This
perniits of wider and higher berths.
Length has also been added to berths,
so that comfort is found In them which
is lacking in ordinary sleeping cars.
These large cars are In service on
practically all of the lines of the St.
Paul road, and are very popular with
the traveling public.

How to Beautify n Fence With Flow

In considering the grounds of a coun
try home one feature is only too often
neglected namely, the fence, says the
Brooklyn Kagle. The fence, far from
being n detraction, as It is so frequent-
' ly, to the beauty of the place, may be
made one of its chief attractions. The
grounds of a plnln little cottage of sub
urban Boston still haunts the writer,
though seen many yours ago. It was
a low wall of graystone, the top of
which wus completely covered with
nasturtiums. All summer long this
wall was a mass of brilliant bloom nnd
a Joy to every passerby. No matter
Low uncompromisingly ugly the fence
Is, It may with the exercise of artistic
taste be transformed into a thing of
beauty.
A picket fence Is nbout ns difficult a
subject in this respect ns It is possible
to have, yet the owner of a country
home In New York state has made hers
the envy of all her neighbors. 'This Is
what she did to bring nbout the de
sired end: At the base of the fence
along Its entire length the ground was
spaded and set with a variety of
plants, large and smnll, the selection
being mndo with a view of keeping
something blooming the season through.
About six inches from the top the In
side of the fence wns fitted with bonnl
shelves, and on these were placed at
intervals jars of plants, including ge
raniums, begonias, verbenas and other
house plants, as well as ferns.
Vines should not he overlooked as
aids in beautifying the fence. For
back yard fences the prime old fash
ioned hollyhocks, when set lu close
rows, become a highly decorative feature.

A Society Orvnnlred to Plant Tree

The Chicago Tree Planting society
was organized recently to plant trees
In the streets of Chicago. With the
election of otlicers it was announced
that one of the first works the society
would undertake would be a fight on
the gas nnd smoke nuisance, to be
urged along new lines.
Then will come the planting of trees
in the slum districts, the distribution
of literature that will educate the peo
ple In tree planting nnd the starting of
a movement to have the care nnd some
times the planting of trees In streets
placed In the hands of the park bonnls.
"Chlrapo has practically 1,100 miles
of treeless streets," said (Jeoree E.
nooker, the secretary of Hih organiza
tion, "nnd the planting of trees in them
is nn immense task. Gas and smoke
! are the greatest enemies of tree growth
wo have. One of our first duties will

; how to care for them, as well an urging
