It is stated In Wall street that the
" United States Steel Co., will in Decem
ber make a third olTer to the employes
to sell them stock in the company, to
be held, five years. It is understood
that the stock is to be sold in the

During a lire in a children's work
house at Shelby villo, Ind., Wednesday,
two little. boys wore suffocated by
smoke in their bods. Thirty other
children in the building at the time
escaped by leaping from the upper
windows to the roof of an adjoining
building.

Struck By a Train.
SAi.KM.Or., Oct. 10. While driving
into Salem lust evening, Thoron E,
Lyons, l!)-ycarold son of L. S. Lyons, a
contractor and painter of this city, was
struck by the evening Albany locul
train. His horse was instantly killed,
his buggy almost completely demol
ished, and he himself is lying at the
home of his parents in a precarious con
dition. Young Lyons has been em
ployed in a local drug store for several
months past.

bad roads to the extent of about

other words, they pay, as Professor
Holmes so vigorously expresses It, an
unnunl "rand tax, sand tax and hill
tnx" amounting to ,$10,000,000. Ten
millions of dollars annually as tribute
to clay, mud, sand, rocks and hills, not
to mention tired beasts, galled shoul
ders, sore backs and profane drivers!
During the last twenty-five years this
bad road tnx has consumed an amount
of money equal to the taxable values of
the whole state of North Carolina. One
tenth of what we wonte annually on
bud roads would give a seven months'
term to every school In North Carolina.

horse and mule in North Carolina were

sad fact, and seemingly a law of na
ture, that he sacrifices the calm health
and strenctli of rural life for the nerv
ous activities of the city. Ills descend

Let us preserve and build up country
life. Let us keep the boys and girls
on the farms. Let us carry the town
to the country aud the country to the
town, preserving the blessings of both,
