Mukden, Oct. 18. It is reported
here that the Japanese are slowly re
tiring from the Suhke. river. Fires
along their line of retreat indicate
that they are burning their stores.
Their retirement Is ascribed to a short
age of ammunition.
It Is reported that the Japanese have
been reinforced by a brigade from
New Cbwang. The Russians were
strengthened today by the arrival of
20,000 fresh trc Dps from Kirin.
Viceroy AlexielT has arrived here to
confer with General Kuropatkln.
ISSUE STILL IN DOUHT.
St. Pktkhshuho, Oct. 18. The Issue
of the bloody drama bolow Mukden is
still in the balance. There Is no at-!
tempt to minimize the severe character '
of the reverse suffered by General
Kuropatkin last week, but as yet there
has been nothing absolutely decisive.
There certainly Is no rout and uo Sedan
and the war oHlce has not yet given up
all hope that Kuropatkin may bo able
again to resume a genuine offensive.

H. R Deliaven, a young man em
ployed on the S. P. stt-um shovel, now
operating at Rice Hill, met with an ac
cident at that place this afternoon that
will cost him his left leg if he re
covers at all. He fell off of the end
car of five loaded with gravel, that
was being slowly backed up the incline,
and one wheel passed ovor his left leg,
about midway between the kneo and
hip, breaking the bone and mashing
the flesh in a sickening manner.
He was brought to Koseburg im
mediately atd this afternoon Doctors
Uouck and Hamilton amputated the
leg, the operation befug In progress
at tne time we go to press.
The injured man is unmarried. His
father lives at Merlin, Josephine Co.

last Thursday wus-well attended and

Profs. Withyeombe, Kent and Cordley
spoke, each in his particular line, and
a lively discussion followed each talk..
In the evening Judge Kiddle Introduced
the speakers, the first being H. K.
Louusbury, who spoke interestingly on
"Why the Railroad Is Interested In
Agricultural Development." He waa
folio wod by Mr. Gilbert, a travelling
man, on "Agriculture From a Commer
cial Viewpoint." In his few well
spoken words, Mr. Gilbert dollujhted
bis audience. Prof. Kent and Dr.
Withyeombe then gave an illustrated
talk on the "Agricultural College" and
"Breeds of Stock," Tho program waa
Intersporsed with music, and taken all
together the Institute was a very enjoy
able and successful one. Wo are very

gentlemen meet with us, and welcome
another Institute, which they promised
