THROWN UPON THE STAGE.

I'onlnr l'ln-T With Utttu.
There havo lately lu the provinces
been several sensational nights at
prominent then tern when to mark the
last performance of a local pantomime
all maiiuei of (,'lfts have been thrown
uiion the stin,'e for tlie benefit of popu
lur performers.
All those (icciuninloO for Iouk with
the inner life of the theatrical profes
sion eun tell some remarkable stories
of the.se (rifts cast upon the slime. The
most celebrated and universal of these
relates to a lady who once held the
main portion of the lease of a promi
nent London theater. While this lady
was still an Heiress only and not a
liiitniijron'KS, an nclress of prent talent
and beauty, there was one nljlit on the
Just production of the piece a small
bouquet east upon tlie si aire nt her
feet. Attached to the bouquet was a
small Russia leather card case, and In
side tills wen.' bunk notes to tho value
of l,ooo exactly. On no fewer than
seven different occasions, with a toler
ably Iouh; Interval between, did tho
same thin occur, and the lady, as al
lcjrfd. hns never from that day to this
discovered who her admirer was,
though all manner of romantic conjec
tures were made at the time.
Even within the last few weeks an
unknown elderly ironilemnn threw an
envelope weighted with pennies and
containing a live pound note to a tiny
child erforndn in a London subur
ban pantomime. Some theaters have
been celebrated for their jrlft nights,
all manner of presents, from frying
pans to irreen vegetables, having been
jrently deposited on the stnire for the
popular actors; yet. on the other hand,
both writs aud .summonses have been
handed to actors who could not be ap
proached through tlie stae door, but
who consented to receive presents over
the footlights on their benefit nights.
The most curious si'ht the writer
ever saw In connection with these jjift
throwing nluhts was In relation to a
favorite actor who, nt a Krcat provin
cial theater, played diuhm a loin; pan
tomimic run the part of a parasite
named Cadi, who carried u pipe
that had a hutfo bowl and whose oft
repented cry was, "Can any one oblige
me with a bit o' 'bacea'r" On the last
nhrht of the performance the familiar
request for a "bit o 'h u-ca" had no
sooner been spoken than literally scores
of packets and "screws of tobacco of
every Imaginable kind were thrown
upon the stage, mere than 1-0 of these
falling about tho actor Loudon Tit-lilts.

"John," alio said, "yoi;r little wlfey

"Cood little Vilfey," he replied.
"What Is It?"
"A smoking Jacket." she explained.
"And 1 saved the money all myself out
of the house allowance. Wasn't I
thouwhirulV"
"Splendid!" he exclaimed.
"And now 1 wl.-di you'd bring me
home some more H oney tonight."
"What did you do with what 1
brought home last night V" he asked lu
some surprise.
"h, that's what I saved the smoking
Jacket money out of," she answered,
"and there wasn't any left." Chicago
