ATTACK AGAIN
Japs Made an Assault on Port
Arthur Monday.

Chek Foo, Sept. 20. The Japanese
made a general assault on the main
forts to the northwest of Port Arthur
yesterday, the attack beginning at day
break and ending at nightfall. No
news of the result is as yet obtainable.
VKXEMOUS ANTAGONISM.
Chee Foo, Sept. 11). According to
Lieutenant Prince Radzivil, of the Rus-
aian army, who reached here last night
from Port Arthur, bearing dispatches
from General Stoessel, the commander-in-chief
of the Russian stronghold, to
General ICuropatkln, the temper of the
belligerents at Port Arthur has reached
an absolute merciless stage.
Prince Radzivil declares that the men
of both armies are absolutely vonemous
in their antagonism. Lieutenant-General
Stoessel has addressed his garrison,
saying that tho present mood of the
Japanese indicates clearly the necessity
of resisting them to the last drop of
Russian blood, because it the Japanese
soldiers entered the fortress it undoubt
edly would be impossible for their offi
cers to control them and prevent a
massacre. For this reason Lieutenant
General Stoessel is making no objection
to civilians leaving Port Arthur.
When the 300 women who are en
gaged in Port Arthur in hospital work
were advised to leave, they replied they
would rather face the possibility of
massacre than desert their posts.
In consequence of the fact that flags
of truce are ignored, numbers of the
Japanese dead which have been- lying
on the slopes of the hills of the north
east defenses for weeks past are still
unburied, and the stench in Port Ar
thur from decomposing bodies when
the. wind la in the right direction is al
most unbearable.
The Russian soldiers, who are In some
cases posted within 500 paces from heaps
of decaying dead, have constantly to
wear their handkerchiefs soaked in
camphor, as otherwise they would . be
unable to remain at their posts.
In the course of the assaults which
took place in the last four days of Aug
ust, two companies of Japanese soldiers,
according to Prince Radzivil, found
themselves at the mercy of the Rus
sians and hoisted a white flag. To this,
however, the Russians paid no atten
tion, and continued to volley rapidly
into the helpless ranks of the enemy.
In the meanwhile Japanese in the rear
of the companies that had raised the
white flag saw what their comrades
bad done and expressed their disap
proval of the surrender by firing Into
their rear.
As a result of he fire from friend and
foe, 600 men w. re annihilated. The
dead fell among ' the decomposing
bodies of previous assaults. For days
afterward the wounded men in the
urea raised fluttering haudkerchiels in
their hands in plea for help, but the
Russians wore afraid to venture out to
give succor.
Within a week the last arm had made
its last unregarded prayer for help,
and the shambles were quiet, but
ghastly waf, the liold of horror. Among
the heaps of dead the Priuce saw two
soldiers, one a Russian and the other a
Japanese, lying locked in a death em
brace, r
The teeth of the Japanese were sunk
In the Russian's throat, while the Rus
sian had furced two of his lingers into
the eye-sockets of his antagonist. The
Prince cited this as merely an incident
denoting the ferocity of the conflict
before Port Arthur.
Prince Radzivil will leave here to
morrow to rejoin General Kuropatkin.

Italian Feud In Chicago
Special to Evening Review.
Chicago, Sept. 20. In the suburb of
Riverdale last night two Italians were
murdered and a thtrd was so badly
wounded that he died in the hospital
this morning. The fact that $500 In
mopey in the clothing of the wounded
man was not molested, showing that
robbery was not the motive for the
crime, leads the police to the belief
that a feud exists among the local Ital
ian residents.
Aged Man Suicides.
Eugene, Or., Sept. 19. A. G. Post,
an aged resident of Watervllle, a vil
llage on the McKenz'e River, 15 miles
ea9t of Eugene, hanged himself in his
son's barn Sunday. P. A. Post, the
son, with whom he resided, iwent to
the barn about noon and was horrified
to find the lifeless body of his father
dangling at the end of a rope, securely
attached to a rafter. Pie had been dead
less than half an hour, as he had been
away from the house about that length
of time. He stood upon a saw-horse,
tied the roe around the sill, tied the
other end around bis neck, and jumped
off the horse.
No motive is assigned for the terrible
deed. The old man bad been In appar
ently good health, and his mind was
not known to be deranged. He was
aged 80 years, and had lived with bis
son .at Watervllle for the past three
years, coming to this country from
Ohio. '

B. V. VanDeCar, the I cadi off Myrtle

land. Mr. VanDeCar will remain here
a few days visiting with friends.
Geo. A. Nteol returned Monday night
from a trip to Michigan- He was ac
companied by his wife and daughter,
who have been spending the summer
in California. Tbey will reside at
Winchester, where Mr. Steel has In
terests in the lumbering project of the
Oregon Boom & Timber Co.

ing day of the 80th annual session of
the sovereign grand lodge, I. O. O. F.,
was a busy and enthusiastic one. At 0
o'clock this morning the delegates as
sembled in Native Son's hill, whore
they were formally welcomed on behalf
of the city of San Francisco and the
local branches of the order. John B.
Goodwin, grand Blre, responded to the
welcomes, after which the sovereign
grand lodge representatives proceeded
to Native Son's hall, whore tho lirst
business session wsb held. Grand Sire
Goodwin made bis annual report to the
sororeign grand lodge.
In this report Mr. Goodwin called at
tention to the fact that the sovereign
grard lodge met in San Francisco in
I860. At thstjtlme the subordinate
lodge membership was 2(18,003. At the
beginning of the present year It was
1,101,421, besides 284,681 women who
belong to the order's auxllliary, the
Degree of Rebekah, making, a total of
1,41111,102 members. The total revenue
of t he ordorinthe year 1808 was $2,341,
078.80. Last year It reached the sum
of $205,5i)i,001.14. In 1808 the amount
expended for relief purposes was $400,
420.54, while in 1903 it was $4,320,509.19.
Membership of the primary branch of
the order on January 1 amounted to
1,151,421. Of these, 107,840 also be
longed to the encampment branch of
the order, 103,013 were members of the
Rebekah lodges, and 18,832 were uni
forms of the Patrlarohs Militant. With
tho combined membership In the two
branches, that for the men and thet for
the women, the I. O. O. F. takes Its
placo at the bead of tlie fraternal orders
of the world.
The day's general program includes
a concert at Mechanics' pavlllion this
afternoon and a grand reception in the
pavillion tonight. Deputy Grand Sire
Robert Wright has not yet arrived.
He has been ill, but it Is confidently
believed he will be able to come and
will consent to his elevation to the
grand slreshlp.

Negro Plot to Kill Whites.

of negroes, has been organized. The
first Indication of its exigence was the
stopping of a white planter on a road
by a party of armed negroes. Ho was
I notified to move on and not stop again.

The body of William Boyd, a young
white man of Shorters, was found
under a bed ln a burning house of a
negress. The body was multilatud by
knife and shotgun wounds.

Prince Herbert Dead.
FuEiDUtniisituiiE, Sept. 19. Princes
Herbert Bismarck died this morning-
after a lingering illnessof cancer of the
stomach.
Prince Herbert, the eldest son of the
famous chancollor, was born in 1849.
He was trained by his father for great
affairs and was steadily advanced dur
ing that period when "the Man of Iron"
was the strongest factor In the govern
ment.
' His careor was nearly wrecked when
