Washington, Sept. 10. Action
Secretary of State Adee today gave
out the following etatement regarding
the HusBlan (ship Lena, now at San
Francisco:
The President has tiday issued or
ders, through the Acting Secretary of
State, that the Uusslan armed trans
port Lena, now at San Francisco, be
taken into custoday by the naval au
thorities of the United States and dis
armed. Features of the conditions pre
scribed are that the o Ulcers and crew
shall be parol led not to leave San
Francisco until some other understand
ing as to their disposal be reached be
tween tbe United States government
and both belligerents; that after dis
armament the vesBel may be to moved
to the private dock for such reason
able repairs as will make her sea
worthy and preserve her In good con
dition during detention; she may be re
paired at the navy yard if Uusslan
commander so elects; that while ata pri
vate dock, the commandant of the navy
yard at Mare Island shall have custody
of the ship and repairs shall be over
seen by an engineer or officer to be de
tailed by the commandant, and that,
when bo repaired, If peace shall not
have been concluded, the vessel shall
be taken back to Mare Island navy
yard and held In custody until the end
of the war.
HOSTON ORDERED TO SEA.
Pan Francisco, Sept. 10. The
United States cruiser Boston, one of
the able fighting ships of the Pacific
squadron, was suddenly ordered out to
sea yesterday morning. Her mission
was admittedly to Be arch for the Itus
b aa cruiser Korea, at that time sup
posed to he somewhere off the Faral
tones. During the forenoon Rear Admiral
Goodrich, commander of the squadron,
was a frequent communication with the
Boston, using the wireless telegraph
system, and he was informed that noth
ing could be seen of the Czar's war
ship. Word was received later that the
Korea had been sighted off the Van
couver coast and, although the local
naval oil leers assert that the Boston is
stillruisiog off the Farallones, It Is
believed that important developments
may come ut any time. It is thought
that if word had not already been sent
hor, her commander will be instructed
early today to hurry northward to
participate in the negotiations that
must follow the arrival of the Korea In
any neutral port.
ASTOUNDING JAPANESE LOSS.
Mukden, September 10. The fail
ure of tbe Japanese to follow up the
advantage gained at Llau Yung has
caused surprise here. An Independent
authority who accompanied the rear
guard from the positions south of Liuo
Vang to Mukden ?iys that this failure
is accounted for by the fact that the
Japanese lost 40,000 killed and wounded !

2-year-old daughter of the suicide, shot

and pending the trial, which was sot for
tomorrow in the circuit court, she was
given possession of the child. Follow
ing the beginning of the suit Monroe

Portland Tragedy.
Portland, Sept. 10. Gus Brcuer,
proprietor of the City View saloon, in
Kast Portland, was shot to death at tbe
rear door of his saloon last night.
Robert Lewis, a carpenter, was arrested
by Detective Day and Weiner shortly
afterward and charged with the crime.
Five Italians were playing cards in the
saloon at the time, one of whom stated
that he saw L3wls shoot Breuer.
