The absence of a disagreeable
foreign or "aftertaste," prov
ing scrupulous cleanliness during
toe ore wing process.
The great majority of beers possess a mouldy
or musty flavor, which leaves a most disagree
able twang in the mouth of the driuker.

Kuropathin's Magnificent Strategy Con-
sists in Running Out of
Harm's Way.

St. Peteksburg, Sept. 6. Accord
ing to a telegram received today from
Mukden, the Japanese forces are now
only fourteen miles from that city.
The booming of Japanese cannon is dis
tinctly heard at the stronghold.
The Harbin correspondent to The
Russ telegraphs that the Russians will
not attempt to hold Mukden but will
retreat to Harbin. The correspondent
adds that Viceroy Ataxic-IT has trans
ferred his headquarters to Hurbin from
Vladivostok.

YEN Tai, Sept. 6. Heavy fighting
is progressing to the northeast of here
today. The Japanese are pressing
northward along the ridges east of the
railway. Numerous skirmishes are oc
curring twenty miles southeast of
Mukden.
Stragglers arriving here report that
a strong body of Russian troops Is
holding General Kurokl ' la check
with a rear guard action while the
main Russian Liao Yang army pro
ceeds north to Mukden.

Emperor Nicholas this afternoon re
ceived a telegram from General Kuro
patkin asking the immediate dispatch

NEXT BATTLE AT MUKDEN.
St. Petersburg, Sept. 5. A dis
patch from Kuropatkio forwarded
yesterday evening, indicates that Gen.
Kuropaikin's army and Kuroki's army
are racing for Mukden and the result is
la doubt. It is reported here, but not
yet confirmed, that Gen. Kuropatkin
was obliged to abandon 200 guns at
Liao Yang. Some of them, tt ia said,
were damaged in the fighting and the
rest were disabled by order of the Bus
stan Commander-in-Chief.

At the head of the imposing column
was a platoon of mounted police com
manded by Sir Knight, Chief of Police
Witt man, of San Francisco. Following

Grapes as Big as Pumpkins.
A recent number of the Strand Mag
a.lnu shows very cloarly how Califor
nia stories are proved, to eastern and
Europp'tn auditors. A half tone cut
shows a grape arbor under which a
farm wagon Is driven, and the grapes,
not in clusters but in slnglo berries,
looking to wel&h from twenty to eighty
pounds apiece, are being loaded.
The magazine explains how this is a
combination picture. The basis ia a
picture of the famous huge grape vino
at Carpontoria, la Banta IJarbara coun
ty. Uion the vegetation of this was
superimposed, but upside down, tho
lower half af a picture of a fluid of
California pumpkins, ready for harvest
ing. Then another photograph, show
ing farmers loading pumpkins upon a
wagon, was added and the result was a
picture of grapes as big as pnmpklns,
apparently susended from a trellis.
California stories are to be relied
