from the Far Kast show that the ter
rible battle which has been raging at
Laio Vang for the past three days has
not yet entirely subsided. It is now
known, however, that tho Russians
were finally compelled to retire from
their position there yesterday and they

JAPANESE IN PURSUIT.
Tokio, Sept. 2. The Japanese are
following up the retreat of the Russians
under command of Gen. Kurojwtktn, at
Liao Yang today and have secured the
use of a number of Russian guns left at
that place. The Russian retreat across
the Taitse river was effected with much
confusion owing to the continued Jap
anese firing of heavy gans posted near
the river.
Among other booty secured by the
Japanese from the retreating Russians
at Liao Yang yesterday were 21,737
rifles thrown away by the fleeing
enemy.
VILLAGES BURNED.
Rome, Sept. 2. A Tokio dispatch
today says that under orders from Gen.
Kuropatkin all the villages about Liao
Yang were burned during the past few
days to prevent them from falling into
the hands of the Japanese. Several
thousand Manchurian residents were
thus rendered homeless. They are

Lynn Riddle wore joined In wedlock at
Riddle, Oregon, by Rev. J. A. Town
send, of Roseburg. The wedding was
solemnized at the home of Mrs. "Will
Langlois, sister of the bride. The cere-;
mony was performed out on the lawn,
the bride and groom standing on the
veranda and the guests seated under
tho trcos. The lawn was illuminated
with Japanese- lanterns which gave a
('harming asect to the whole scone.
Promptly at 8 o'clock the bride and
groom came out of the house, and be
fore the numerous" assembled guests
were joined in marriage by tho ring
ceremony, which was very impressive.
The bride was attired in a lovely
gown of tan voile, trimmed with in
sertion and ribbon, ovor tan silk, and
carried a borjuet of whito lilies tied
with a bow of blue, ribbon.
After tho coremony the bride and
groom threw the Uoquet, which Is the
usual custom. Miss Anna Wharton
caught the bride's boquet and when
thrown by the groom was caught by
Fred Winston.
A delicious lunch of Ice cream, aher
bert, cake and lemonade was served on
the lawn.
A great many useful and pretty gifts
were received.
The Riddle band gave the bridal
couple a serenade which was groatly
enjoyed by all.
The guests departed about ten o'clock
wishing the happy couple all the joys
of a long wedded life.
Mr. Wharton is a salesman for the
Hair-Riddle Hardware Co., of Grants
Pass, and his bride fs the daughter of
Hon. and Mrs. O. W. Riddle, of A -ilea,
Douglas county. Both are popular and
worthy young people whose Buccess In- -life

the whole lot as a gift. I suppose they
must have come down the river from
the Lord knows where but I tell you
they must have been the last cutting of
the woods that had been picked over

Ex-Gov. Shaw, of Iowa, now secre
tary of the treasury In President Roose
velt's cabinet, opened the republican
campaign in Oregon with an address at
the Marquam Grand theatre In Port
land Wednesday night. He spoke a

to California points. The main portion
of his seches Is devoted to upholding
the ''stand pat" policy on the present
trust-breeding and trust-fostering tariff
policy which compels American con
sumers to pay much higher prices for
American manufactured goods than
they are sold for abroad. Secretary
Shaw is said to be a pleasing and per
suasive speaker and eminently filled for
the purposes of his mission. Many

is sending his cabinet members to all
