St. Petkrsiiuro Sept. 1. Reports
from Liao Yang today state that the
desperate fighting there yesterday
continued until midnight last night
with frightful slaughter. Gen. Kuro
patkin gave an order for the Russian
troops to fall back to their main line of
fortifications, owing to the continued
Japanese onslaughts, but the move
ment was not effected.
An official message today announces
that Gen. Kroposky, cotnmandlug a
portion of the Russian lighting line at
Liao Yang, was seriously wounded
yesterday.
The Japanese army, under command
of Gen. Kuroki, Is crossing the Taitse
river to the east and northeast of Liao
Yang today. One division crossed on
pontoon bridges and others are follow
ing. FRIGHTFUL SLAUGHTER.
Rome:, Sept. 1. Dispatches from
Liao Yang state that the total losses on
both sides there during the past two
days and nights will exceed 27,000 men.
Of these the Russians lost 15,000 in
killed, wounded and prisoners. Be
sides this they lost 45 cannon, 4,000
rifles and 200 wagons destroyed. The
estimates of the Japanese losses are
12,000 killed and we uncled, making this
the bloodiest battle of modern times.
FIGHTING CONTINUES.
Tokio, Sept. 1. News reached here
this evening that the Russian right
center, defending Liao Yang, is re
treating and the Japanese are in pursuit.
Another Coast Steamer.
Maushfigld, Ore., Aug. 31. J. D.
Spreckles, of San Francisco, has an
nounced his Intention to put a new first
class Coast steamer in commission to
ply between Marshfleld and Portland
at an early date. While the new
steamer will carry passengers and
freight of all kinds, the primary cause
for putting the vessel In service is to
enter the Portland market with the
products of Mr. Spreekles' coal mines
at Beaver Hill. These mines are now
producing 500 tons of marketable coal
daily and have a capacity of 1000 tons
daily, the output being restricted to
the demand.

Oregon will arrive today from Port
land, sent by Most Rev. A. Christie,
Archbishop, to look over the situation
aud consider the prospects for the
erection of a hospital in Roseburg.
This city, situated in one of the most
healthful regions of Oregon, on ac
count of the always fresh mountain
air, is an ideal spot for a hospital. No
such an establishment now exists be
tween Sacramento, Marshfleld and
Salem or Portland, which shows that
there Is a grand field for one in this
part of Oregon. And where could be
a nicer location than in this pictur
esque region, which is, bound to be
come gradually a health resort? It is
now with the citizens of this prosper
ous city to decide whether they want a
hospital and thus attract to their grow
ing city and to their surrounding fer
tile valleys some more of the industri
ous people. To contribute $5,000 for
the erection of a hospital is only a
trifle for such a city as Roseburg. Sup
pose 20 persons donate $100 apiece,
then the Sisters wiU manage to get
the balance needed from the rest of
the citizens and from farmers and
neighboring towns and mills.
A hospital conducted by Sisters is
for the benefit of suffering humanity.

all points beyond, makes It to your ad
vantage, in case you contemplate a trip
to any point east, to write us before

persons wero killed and 122 injured in
a wreck on the Grand Trunk-railway
near Richmond, Quebec, this morntug.
The disaster occurred on a curve at
11 o'clock this morning and was caused
by the head-on collision of two pas
senger trains running at nearly full
speed.

The revenues derived from patients
are, as a rule, expended to giving more
comfort to the sick and accommodate
poor patients that are without means.
For the Sisters hospital is no money
making concern, but only a burden,
when speaking from a business view
of it, yet their vocation is to help suf
fering humnnity, and for that end they
assume such a burden. For cities that
have a Sister's a hospital, such an
establishment is an attraction for
settlers. If Roseburg, at the coming
Lewis and Clark Exposition in Fort
land next year could boast of a Sister's
hospital, then no doubt many visitors
will be attracted to this beautiful
region who otherwise might never
have given it a second thought. And
when once here seeing for themselves
the splended school accomodations
aud a neat Sister's hospital, many un
doubtedly will wish to settle here. F.
The World's Fair Route.
Those anticipating an Eastern trip,
or a visit to the Louisiana Purchase
Exposition at St. Louis, cannot a (lord
to overlook the advantages offered by
the Missouri Pacific Railway,
which, on account of Its various routes

Old Soldier Goes Insane.
La Gkanpk, Or. Aug. 30. Joseph
S. Maxwell, who arrived In this city
Saturday from the Soldiers' Home at
Roseburg, on his way to his old home
in Wallowa county, was placed in
charge of officers hcru Monday, after
having shown signs of Insanity and
threatening to take his own life. Re
was examined before Judge Harrison
and taken to the asylum at Salem.
Mr. Maxwell at one time was marshal
of the town of Kntcrpriw, Wallowa
county, and has held different rcspoo
sible positions there, but of late years
his mind has ben unbalanced, and he
has been in the asylum once before.

Cooper took place here on last Sunday
