Suez, July 19. The steamer Malacca,
owned by the Oriental Steamship Co.,
which was seized by the Russians in
the Red Sea last week, arrived here
today, commanded and manned by
Russians. The British company's
agent here was refused admittance on
board the vessel.
COMPLICATIONS PEAKED.
London, July 19. There is a well
detined feeling in all quarters this
morning that the seizure of theBritish
German steamer at Suez by the Russi
ans marks the first. European complica
tion during the Russo-Japanese war.
It is feared that this action will lead to
serious complications with the powers
involved.
TWO VESSELS PASSED,
Constantinople, July 19. The
Porte has authorized two additional
Russian volunteer cruisers to pass
through the Dardanelles.
RECENT LOSSES REPORTED. .
London, July lit. A dispatch from
Gen. Kurokl today states that the
Russian losses in the light at Motion
Ling were 2000, while those of the
Japanese will not exceed 300.

the minors' union have been deprived
of their liberty and property without
due process of law. They have been
banished from the state without rea
son other than the owners of the
mines controlled the state political
machinery and the militia. They have
been accused of crimes and adjudged
guilty by their accusers, by men placed
in otliee by the militia after the rog
ulary elected otllclals hud been re
moved without regard to the law or tJ
their rights. As a logical and natural
result, the workmett, maddened by
their treatment, have committed ex
cesses for which the guilty ones should
be apprehended and punished, but the
average American citizen will Hod
it dillicult, whatever his views im
unionism to even tacitly approve the
gross excosses practiced by tho state
troops in maltreating women and chil
dren whose only offense is that their
husbands and fathers are members of

Hon. T. R. Sheridan Tells of the Events
of the Recent Great Con
vention There.
Hon. T. R. Sheridan reached home
this morning from St. Louis where he
attended the National Democratic Con
vention as a delegate from Oregon.
He was one of the four Oregon
delegates who supported Judge Par
ker for the nomination, thjO other
throe beiug Gov, Chamberlain, C. E.
I led Held and F, V. Holman. or tho
others, J. D. Matlock and S, M. Gar
land voted for Hearst, James Gloason
for McClellan, and W. P. Butcher for
Bird S. Color. To a Review rep
resentative Mr. Sheridan practically
repeated his statements as given in
Monday's Portland Journal, as follows:
"My strongest impressions of the
convention? Well, perhaps the thing
that struck mo most forcibly was the
iniluenceof Mr. Bryan. His personality
curried far more weight than that of

quiet the convention. Whenever he

Work at the Lime Deposits.
Operations on tho lime quarry at
Hon. Pllnn Cooper's place, seven mi lea
south of town, are progressing nicely,
according to a statement made by Mr.
Cooper while In conversation with a
Rkvikw reporter today. Tin ompany
of Portland capitalists who bonded tho
property, as was exclusively stated la
Tiik Rkvikw over two months ago,
have started work in earnest and now
have a force of 12 men there. Chief
among preparations being made, is tho
construction of a tramway from the
quarry to the site of the proposed kiln,
about one-half mile distant.
Mr. Cooper said that the company
considers the Iron deposits fn the quarry
oven more valuable than the 11 mo, and

course, be a small factor in the expense,
it being right at hand.
While the company has not yet di
vulged all Its plans, Mr. Cooper be
lieves that a railway spur for transport

place. The present plans of the com f
pany,' so far as known, Involves simply
