an absence of over five years which he
spent in California.
Mr. J. Handon, an old pioneer resi
dent of this place, arrived here Sunday
from Saw Whatcom, Wiiali., to spend
a fiiw days with his old friends.
Dick Sunders, of Drain, is busy at
presentdrilliug wells for various parlies
at this plucu. He has just finished one

depth of about 75 feet, but they did not

The Prohibition party, In national
convention assembled, at Indianapolis,
June 30, 1904, recognizing that the
chief end of all government is the es
tablishment of those principles of right
eousness and justice that have been re
vealed to men as the will of tbo ever
living God, desiring His blessing upon
our national life, and believing in the
perpetuation of the high Ideals of gov
ernment of the people, by tbo people
and for the people, established by our
fathers, makes the following declara
tion of principles and purposes:
1. The widely prevailing system of
licensed and legalized sale of alchoholic
beverages is so ruinous to individual
interests, so inimical to public welfare,
so destructive to national wealth, and
so subversive to the rights of great
masses of our citizenship, that the de
struction of the traffic is, and for years
has been, the most Important question
in American politics.
2. We denounce the lack of states
manship exhibited by the leaders of I
the Democratic and Republican parties
in their refusal to recognize the para- j
mount importance of this question and !
tie cowardice wiih which tbo leaders
of these parties have courted the favor
of those whose selfish interest) are ad-:
vauced by the continuation and aug-1
mentation of the trafllc, until today the j
influence of the liquor traffic practic
ally dominates national, Btatu and local
government throughout the nation. i
3. Wo declare the truth, demon
strated by the experience of half a cen
tury, that all methods of dealing with
the liquor trafllc which recognizes its
right to exist, in any form, under any
system of license or tax or regulation, f
have proved powerless to remove its
evils and useless as checks upon its
growth, while the insignificant public
revenues which have accrued there
from have seared the public conscience
against a recognition of its iniquity.
4. Wo rail public attention to the'
fact, proved by the experience of more
than .10 years, that to secure the enact
ment unci enforcement of prohibition
legislation, In which -alone lies the
hope of tho protection of tho people
from the liquor tactile, it Is necessary;
that the legislative, executive and judi-'
eial branches of government should bo
in the hauus of a political party in har
mony with the prohibition principle,
and pledged to its embodiment in law
and to tbo execution of those la a s,
5. We pledge the Prohibition party,
wherever given power by the sulTrages
of the peoplo, to the enactment and en
forcement of laws prohibiting and
abolishing tho manufacture, importa
tion, transportation and sale of alcohol
ic beverages,

no other issue of equal importance be- !
fore the American people today, but '
that the so called Issues upon whinh 1
the Democratic and Republican parties
seek to divide the electorate of tbe
country are, in large part, subterfuges
under the cover of which they wrangle

7. Recognizing that tho Intelligent
voters of the country may properly ask
our attitude upon other questions of
public concern, we declare ourselves in
favor of:
The Impartial enforcement of all law.
The safe-guarding of the people's
rights by rigid application of the prin-.
ciplea of justice to all combinations of
capital and labor.
The recognition of the fact that the
right of suffrage should depeud upon
tbe mental and moral qualifications of
tbe citizen.
A more intimate relation between
tbe people and government by a wise
application of the principles of the in
itiative and referendum.
Such changes in our laws as will
place tariff schedules in the handsof an
omul-partisan commission.
The application of uniform laws for
all our country and dependencies.
The election of United States Sen
ators by vote of the people.
The extension and honest administra
tion of tbe civil service laws.
The safe-guarding of every citizen,
in every place under the government
of tho people cf the United States, in
all tbe rights guaranteed by tbe laws
and the constitution.
International arbitration, and we de
clare that our nation should contribute
in every manner consistent with nation
al dignity, to the permanent establish
ment of Maoe between all nations.
The reform of our divorce laws, tbe
tlnal extirpation cf polygamy, ami the
total overthrow of the present shame
ful system of tiie illegal sanction of tho
social evil, with its unspeakable traffic
