Almost ideal climatic conditions
greeted the citizens of Douglas county
yesterday, thereby making the national
anniversary all the more glorious.
Celebrations were held in at least half
a dozen places, and scores of picnic
parties enjoyed the day In as many dif
ferent localities.
EXERCISES AT OAKLAND.
A very large crowd gathered at Oak
land to coajiuomorate the day of our
national independence. The parade
was formed at l:30 a. m. and marched
to the grounds just below town. The
first carriage vus occupied by Hon.
W. B. Clarke, of Millwood, president
of the day, and Hon. Dexter Rico, of
Jtoseburg, orator. Following In tine,
the Oakland baud, the degree team, in
uniform, from the Oakland lodge of
Woodmen of the World, a most hand
somely arranged and decorated liberty
car in which wore seated over 40 beau
tiful little girls. Next was a large con
course of citizens in their private con
veyances, the line extending almost
the entire distance from town to the
groucds. There the following exer
cises were appropriately rendered:
Music, Oakland band; Song, "Amer
ica", Band accompaniment; Prayer,
Rev. J. W. Stockton; Song, "God
Save America"; Beading declaration
of Indedendcnce, Z. N. Agee; Solo,
"My own United States"; Oration,
Hon. Dexter ltlce, of Roseburg; Song,
Chorus; Music, Band.
Mr. Rice's oration was an effort
worthy of special commendation and
was received with hearty approval.
After dinner a baseball game, Oak
land vs. Wilbur, horse races, footraces,
egg race, fat man's race, tug of war,
sack race, wheelbarrow race and
various other sports amused the large
crowd nntll late in tho evening. At
night a grand ball concluded a very
successful celebration.
THE DAY AT GLENDALE.
The nation's birthday was observed
atGlendale la a creditable manner.
Several hundred people, many of whom
had come from neighboring communi
ties, assembled in the morning at the
celebration grounds, just west of town,
and listened to an Interesting program
of patriotic music, songs and speeches.
The assembling was preceded by a
parade to the grounds headed by the
Glendale band of sixteen pieces, which
discoursed patriotic airs.
W. F. Minard acted as president and
A. J. Osteen as grand marshal of the
day. The oration delivered by Hon.O.
P. Coshow, of Roseburg, was a proud
review of the nation's progress since
Its birth. He depicted in glowing
terms the unparalled advancement of
the nation until at the present day It
stands superior to all other countries
In Industries, productiveness, commerce
invention and intellectuality. His re
marks were frequently Interspersed

Japanese retreated westward toward
Tensin Tien. The Japs now occupy
Siao Peln Ling, tlx miles northwest of
FengShul Ling.
Reutora also has a dispatch reporting
the Japs have occupied FengShul Ling
and their mala army has advanced
westward.

DIED.
GUTH.At Glendale, Oregon, July 3,
l!)04, John J. Gull), aged 47 years.
Although hemorrhage was the Im
mediate cause of Mr. Guth's death, he
had been an incurable sufferer from
dropsy for several months prior to his
demise. Mr. Guth was a member of
the retaM Iifiucp f,rm of Guth and
residence in Glendalo he followed
mining on Co (Tee Creek, near Perdue.
Mr. Guth was an ex-member of the U.
S. regular army and during his Dve
years' service participated incampalgi
against the Indians in Montana.
Mr. Guth was a member of Court
Glenn No. ftO, Order of Foresters, and
Roseburg Lodge No. 324, B. P. O.
Elks. The funeral was held at Glen
dale Monday under the auspices of the
former order.
Surviving Mr. Guth are his wife, a
son, Fred, serving In the U. 8. navy,
and his mother and three sisters In Now
Jersey.
A peculiar colndence In connection
with Mr. Guth's funeral being held on
July 4, Is that he was grand marshal of
the day during the 4th of July cele
bration at Glendalo last year. His
business partner, ttnos Wall, was to
have been grand marshal of the day
this 4th of July, hut sudden Illness of
typhoid fever prevented.

the statement that hunters may kill
Chinese pheasants this year during the
