Scenes at the Carnival.
"See the statue turning to life!"
"No name, and alive!"
"See the ornamental glassblowers!
The air resounded with these cries
last night as the busy spellers earned
their salaries and rent the atmosphere
into tiny slivers down in the "Midway",
as so me laxly facetiously dubbed the
streets where the Dixie Carnival Com
pany is located.
And they were all there. Tho lame,
the well, tho old, the young, mothers
with infants in arms, fathers with
youngsters holding to each hand and
whole families Mocking hither and yon.
A more perfect night could not have
been granted for the opening of the
week's carnival and until a late houi
the grounds were alive with spectators.
J he gay colored- fronts of the tents
and there are nearly twenty of all kinds
shone bravely In the light, and tho
noisy spellers caught and held the at
tention on every side. Nothing of a
rough or unseemly nature was visible.
Tho wholo scene was as peaceful as the
ntorior of the avorago elrcus tent and
espectful attention wus given to the
spectators everywhere.
One or two shows was not open last
night but everything will bo doiug
business this evening.
The high Ferris wheel was the cen
ter of attraction to many and all even-
carried spectators to its full capao
ity.
The big snake claimed considerable
attention. lie Is a monster without a
doubt and the best exhibition of its
kind ever presented in our city.
The glass blowers were well patron
ized and their work Is of a high order
and fascinating in the extreme. In
this tont samples of tho work are given
to visitors.
Tho electric palace was probably the
greatest drawing card of all last night.
lore the spectators saw a woman ap-
lear and then transformed into a
statue, then back to life. Alma, the
tiro dancer, is very good and tho pic
tures of Mt. Pelce wore moro than
pleasing. Tho exhibition is unusually
lever and well worth seeing.
The remaining attractions are all
good enough and it can Iw said they aro
moral, which Ib not always the case
with carnlvul companies.
Dana Thompson, the world's greatest
high diver, did not make his lean for
Hfo last night owing to tho fact that
the tank which contains tho water was
broken In transporting last Sunday,
but will bo repaired in time so as Mr.
Thompson can perform his dare devil
act tonight.
Merger Hros. renowned equilibrist
wore more than pleasing tn tholr act
ast night.
The carnival will romain here until
the lNth and will undoubtedly be a
great drawing canl. It comes under
the auspices of the Maccntiees, and nlav
on a percentage basis. The Maccabee's
snaro or tho proceeds will be devoted
to furnishing its new home. M.

Since the newspapers throughout the !
country have a great deal to say
about, my candidacy for the Presidency,
I have thought it proper to say some
thing through the medium of a home
paper by way of a short preliminary
before issuing to the public our the
nation's platform and message by me
as the people's true Representative.
Of the many marked copies and clip
pings mailed to rae, criticising my late
announcement, reminds me of the adage,
"Many men of many minds," etc.
Yes, there arc critics, wise and other
wise. No doubt some of those editors
in their criticism "smole a smile" us
they penned olT their smart sayings.
However, it moved me into a hearty
laugh as I read some of them. There is
another titling adage: He laughs best
who laughs last."
All commendation is appreciated by
me, and the contrary does not daunt
me in the least. Having my eye on the
goal, I shall not allow myself to be
thwarted by impediments, but will
walk through all dilllculties.

osttion implies also the power of j
thought to carry it out. Life in this I
world, after all, Is simply a matter of
brain.
I read lately in a local pajer: "It is.
sometimes difficult to conviucethe world i
that you have brains unless you have j
money." Sometimes does not mean I
always. The portion of the world who
look to money as superior to mind, are j
not the knowing world. Accordion to
the above quoted hypothesis, Belmont i
and Morgan are superior in wisdom to
Solomon, Jesus, Paul, Plato, Shake
speare, Webster, Lincoln and tho rest, j
I admit that it takes brains to nccu- j,
mulate wealth, as it dues to accumulate
fat on a hog. Hut then both are born
of greed, for both are prone to stand '
lengthwise in tho trough. Again, line
mansions imposing on the hillsides and
on the hilltopand elsewhere are mostly
conspicious advertisements of fraud,
and the costlior the building the more
colossal the fraud in the manner of ob
taining the money that built them or
bought them.
Time and again I have had the oppor
tunity ol starting on the road to weal th,
and should 1 have direct mi my mind in
the channel used bv eome in their tac
tics as skinners of the public, I could
have been today a multi-millionaire.
A man cannot raise a patch of pota
toes, shoe a horse or build a house un-
o-ts bo knows how. Likewise with
the gaining the Presidency, and had I
the choice between "a bar'l of money,"
as tho late Tilden expressed it upon his
entering the Presidential fight, and
marshals of knowledge to b ethically
lined, I would choose the latter.
Heretofore I havo been successful in
my undertakings, and if somo did not
"pan out financially" they wore model-
like in useful effect to the people of my
environment.

for and to the people, and the people's
consideration. It will be an eye-opener
to all nations.
