Mr. Ashbury Harmon was born in JctTerson County, Jowa, in IBS!). He came to Oregon in 1871 and settled in Jackson county, and from there removed to Douglas county in 1830 and slopped in Cow Creek Valley whoro he lived until his death, which occurred April W04. Mr. Harmon was married to Miss Emma O. Davis and leaves a widow and five children (two boys and tbreo girls). Ho joined Uiddlo Camp No. 21. W. O. W., at Riddle In 1002 and carried a policy for $1000. He was laid to rest in tho beautiful cemetery over looking Ridd loa on Sunday, April 24, l!04. Tho fuoeral services from the residence to the grave were curried out in a very Impressive manner by Riddle Camp, V. O. V. Visiting mombers from Myrtle Creek and Port land assisted in tho services. The Woodmen of tho World will erect a beautiful monument over tho grave In the near future. In the death of Neighbor Harmon tho community loses a useful citizen, tho camp a faithful member and the sorrowing family a loving husband and father. San Frinclico For Betterment of Schools, Being' engaged in school work, thus making it Impossible for him to see the voters personally, Prof. Thurman Chaney, the democratic nominee for county school superintendent, makes the following announcement of hit views in relation to this non-political olllco. The qualifications for county school superintendent should be based upon talent for educational supervision rather than political views. The chief aims of the public school nro: 1. To build a good moral character. 2. To train ttie children to be loyal citizens. 3. To train the mental faculties on thorough, practical lines, that will fit girls and boys for women and men of affairs. The school system of Oregon has reached a stage requiring only careful supervision to give our boys and girls proper educational training. To make our schools what they should be, the following principles must be carried out: Country schools must have more at tention and made equal as far as possi ble with city schools. The suerintendent must visit each school every year, investigate its work ings and right Its evils if any exist. Tho school work must be rigidly en forced without favor to ny but with justice to all. Kuquiries addressed to the county su perintendent upon school matters must be attended to promptly. Teachers' Institutes must be of such a nature as to enable the teachers in attendance to broaden their teaching ability. The superintendent must do every duty pertaining to the good of the schools without fear of public opinion. I will endeavor, if elected, to carry out the above principles and all others that may arise along the line of educa tional progress. Being a teacher of eleven years con tinuous experience in Douglas county schools, I believe I understand the needs of our schools thoroughly.
