Frank Brothers Given One Year
For Larceny
ALL JURYMEN DISCHARGED
Grand Jury Recommends Maintenance
of Connty Indigents at
the Fair Grounds.
Douglas county makes one contribu
tion to the state penitentiary from the
current term of the circuit court here,
in the person of Frank Brothers, whom
a jury Wednesday afternoon found
guilty of larceny. Pursuant to the re
quest of the convicted man, Judge Ham
ilton pronounced sentence immediately
after the verdict was announced. The
sentence was Imprisonment In the peni
tentiary for a period of one year.
Sheriff Parrott took Brothers to Salem
on the overland train last night. "
The grand jury signified conclusion
of Us labors Wednesday evening by fll-
ing their final report, after which they
were discharged. The trial jurors had
been discharged earlier during the day,
but two jury cases having been heard
during the term.

Railroad Fever in Klamath.
Klamath Falls, Or., May 18.
Samuel Hill, son-in-law of James J.
Hill, and Charles Chamberlain, western
manager of the Hill system of railroals
at Seattle, arrived here yesterday and
are looking over the railroad situation.
It Is rumored that the Harriman in
terests have secretly made preliminary
surveys into this district from Medford,
and as the Santa Fe railroad is coming
up the coast from San Francisco it may
branch off into this new district.

Astoria, Or., May 18. The Grand
Kncammnent nf the Odd Fellows was
with, of Portland, junior warden; Thos.
F. Kyan, of Oregon City, grand repre
sentative. The annual session of the Grand
Lodge of Odd Fellows commenced here
this morning, with 310 delegates in at
tendance. Every grand lodge o Ulcer
was present, and after organization the
graod lodge degree was conferred on
148 past grands. The balance of the
morning session was taken up with the
reading of the annual reports of the
oil leers. The electionof otttcers will be
held tomorrow morning, the special in
terest being in grand representative,
for which J. W. Welch, of Astoria, and
Joseph Micelll. of Hose burg, are candi
dates. This morning's session of the lie
bekahs was devoted to routine work.
They will hold their election tomorrow
morning.

While operating a pump at the South
Umpqua power station today, Gustav
Lau got the middle finger of his right
hand caught in some machinery and
the flesh covering the last joint was al

London, May 19. An official dis
patch received here this afternoon an
nounces that the Japanese cruUer
Koshino and the Battleship Hatsuse
were sunk off Port Arthur during a
bombardment last Monday. All of the
crew of the Koshino is reported to have
porlBhed, while 041 of the crew of the
Hatsuse was saved.
The destruction of these warships
wan due to their coming in contact with
submerged mines In the entrance to
the harbor.
(The Hatsuse was built In London In
11)00 and was one of the largest and
most formidable battleships in commis
sion in the Japanese navy. Her dis
placement was 15,000 tons. She was
protected by armor ranging in thick
ness from 4 to 14 Inchos. Her arma
ment was as follows: Four 12-lnch
guns; fourteen 0-lnch guns twenty 3-inch
guns, fourteen smaller guns and four
submerged torpedo tubes. Her ac
credited speed was 1!) knots.)

ese troops have marched several miles

London, May 10. A violent rise in
Japanese securities has been occasioned
here by well founded rumors concern
ing good prospects for peace between
Japan and Russia at an early date.

St. Peteksiujro, May 18. The Ad
miralty Is now convinced by nmil re
ports received from Port Arthur that
Vice-Admiral Togo used submarine
boats in his operations. A letter from
Lieutenant-General Stossel says that he
was standing on Golden Hill when the
Russian battleship 1'etropavlovsk went
down and he saw a submarine Iwat
torpedo the battleship. Lieutenant
Sehreiber claims be distinctly saw the
periscope of a submarine boat and could
trace the courso of the voaboI. Ofllcers
of the Hussian battleship Pobicda
testified that a submarine boat dls-
I charged a torjedo against their ship
I and they fired at the submarine boat,
' hoping to sink it, but failed.

Among the May attractions booked
at the opera house next Thursday is
the favorite farce, "Brown's In Town."
The play is on its way to the Pacific
Coast for a spring tour of all the large
cities. The piece Is by Mark K. Swan
and was written in the author's happi
est vein. Several new musical features
have been added and the management
promise an excellent company, which
