struggle in which 10,000 men were

The news of Port Arthur's fall was

Challenges liiniicr Hermann to a Joint

Gold Hill, Or., May 13. Col.
Robert M. Veatch, the Democratic
nominee for congressman from the First
district, opened bis campaign last night
with a rousing mass meeting. A big
audience assembled to hear him and
the enthusiasm was unrestrained.
Colonel Veatch devoted himself to a
review of Ringer Hermann's career in
public olliee, from the removal from the
receivership at Roaeburg 30 years ago,
down to his summary dischurge from
the olllce of land commissioner a little
more than a year ago. The evidence
of the government records and the
proofs gathered by special agents of
the land department were cited in
array, to demonstrate Hermann's re
sponsibility for the colossal frauds
which have been porpotrated. Colonel
Veatch made a scathing arraignment of
the republican nominee and he was in
terrupted again and again by the en
thusiastic applause of his hearers.
Colonel Watch is confident of success
and declares his belief that the voters
of the First district will not again re
turn to Washington a man whoso
record is so tarnished as is Hermann's.
In the course of his address last
night he declared his Intention to
challenge Hermann to a joint campaign
of the district. The challenge will be
sent immediately upon Hermann's re
turn from Washington, which Is ex-
