At the river crossing the Japanese dead lie piled up literally in heaps, and General Kuroki's success was purchased at such a heavy cost that the Russians are disposed to re gard It as rather a defeat than a victory for him. Alexander Luft, 14-year-old son of Conrad Luft, a farmer living near Endlcott, was fatally- shot by his brother, aged 12, this after noon. The boys were shooting squir rels, when the gun was accidentally discharged, the ball from a 22-caliber gun striking the elder boy In the bock, two inches to the left of the spinal col umn, and passed through the body, coming out of the abdomen, piercing the intestines. Phillips was a prisoner in the car for seven days and was conscious two duys. A brakeman passing the car beard his moans and breaking open the dour found the man almost dead. He was revived and said ho had entered the car at Salt Lake.
