Its Shops.
Washington, May 3. Over 8000
machinist s and a large number of allied
workers on the Atchison, Topeka &
Santa Fe Railroad were reported out
on a strike up to 5 o'clock this after
uoon. W hea the whole striking
strength is brought out, embracing not
only the machinists, but Allied Metal
Mechanics' Association, boileruiakers,
blacksmiths, copperworkers, hel pers,
etc., as well as the total number in
volved, may approximate between 10,
000 and 12,000 men.
On March 23 the International As
sociation of Machinists submitted a list
of 20 rules which they desired the
Santa Fe to contract to observe in the
management of- its machine shops.
The officials allege that ihis would bo a
recognition of the union, and would
practically unionize the shops, and take
them out from under the control of the

Portland, May 3. Herbert W.
Gowoll, a well-known Seattle advertis
ing man, was found dead In a room of
the Cottage lodging house in this city
yesterday morning. He bad ended his
own life by gas asphyxiation, after hav
ing accumulated debts and obligations
whii h ho could not meet.
To gambling he attributes his loss of
fortune and his consequent despair.
He had squandered his savings of $1100
across the faro table, leaving bis wife
and daughter dependent upon them
selves. In letters which he left Gowell urged
that the gamblers who won his money
should provide for his wife and arrange
to meet bis obligations Incurred in this
city.

from the Japanese front beyond the
Yalu states that all the dead from the
big battle a few days ago have been
buried, the wounded have been given
medical aid and that the army is ready
to continue its advance into Manchuria.
The dispatch adds that many of the
enemy were found hiding in the brush
and taken prisoners.

The latter turned machine guns upon
the approaching natives with such

disorder and scattering in all directions.
The village was entered and found to
contain no women or children and was
therefore fired.

line-up of players less than a week ago.
War on "Chinks" and Japs.
Okhuox City, May 3. The State
Federation of Labor has gone on record
as being uncompromisingly opposed to
either Chinese or Japanese immigra
tion, and will carry tho war to Wash
ington. It came yesterday in the form
of a resolution which was unanimously
adopted.

found to be largely attended when the
session opened yesterday afternooi .
Women and men sat in the convention
and every conceivable trade was rep
resented.

Insane Asylum.

Crcflield's wife and Sophia Hartley,
aged IS, daughter of Lewis Hartley,
the mining man, were committed to
the asylum today. Both were roaming
the streets barefooted and bareheaded,
(Mrs. Creffleld is a daughter of O. V.
Hurt, of Corvallis, at .hose houso
Creflleld started the sect known as the
Holy Rollers, and where he was har
bored for several weoks whllo tho Roll
, ers wore at the height of "success".
Shortly after theoman's marriage to
the self-styled "afmstle," determined
, residents of Corvallis took Creflleld and
j his partner, Brooks, through the
; streets of the town one night, and then
I covered them with tar and feathers.

Association, today rnceivod the follow
ing telegram from President F. J,
Hagenbarth, of Salt Lake City:
"Just received a telegram from
Chicago, stating that the Western and
Northwestern lines had granted ourr
request for return transportation tor
livestock shipping, elTeotlve May 2."
This is the result of a conference be-
tween a committee from the National
Livestock Association and the general
tralllc managers of Western lines held
in Chicago on February 25, at which
the former demanded the abolition of
the tonnage system in hauling live
stock, the restoration of the return
pass to bona fide shippers, and a read
justment of freights rates from certain
localities.

Governor Defends Prison.
Sal km, May 3. Referring to the
reort of a mutiny in the state peniten
tiary, which it is alleged took place
Friday on account of objections to the
food, Governor Chamberlain, in an
interview this' morning said ho bad
personally investigated the dietary of
the penitentiary aud improved It from
time to time and that the convicts are
now bettor fed and cared for than ever
before.
They have meat three times a week
for breakfast, which they never had
previous to the present administration.
The governor claims that the men In
the Oregon penitentiary are aa well fed
as in any fetate prison, lie challenges
anyone to go out to the prison aud see
for themselves.
