Chicago, April 22. Marx, Van Dine
and Niedemeir, the three youthful car
barn bandits, were hanged here this
morning. The trio went to their death
bravely.
Nledemier was very pale and weak
from his double attempt at suicide, and
stubbornly refused to embrace religion.
He spent the greater part of the night
smoking cigarettes and joking with his
guards. He was executed separately at
10:36 o'clock, his body writhing and
twisting for six minutes before life was
extinct.
Marx and Van Dine professed re
ligion before going to death. They
were executed at 11:17 o'clock and 11:57
o'clock, respectively. Both expired

Eight murders were committed by
the youthful desperadoes known as the
"Carbarn Gang."- Neidemeier, their
leader, before his execution confessed
to having killed five additional men
whose names he did not know. All the
crimes-ofthe trio were characterized
by the same absence of moral sense
that is displayed by the beast of prey
when It destroys a victim. Criminal
annals nowhere have produced more
soulless or pitiless monsters than these
beardless boys. They were products of
atavism and degenercy. Each murder
er had u drunken father. They grew
up In Chicago's slums, frequented
"sawdust saloons," read nickel novels,
belonged to "boys' athletic clubs" and
began their criminal careers by steal
ing lead pipe from vacant houses. A
cowardly, slow-witted 'lounger, Emil
Roeski, was taken rato their confidence.
He carried their weapons and tools
when they ordered him to do so.
Rteskt was given a separate trial and a
few days ago was sentenced to impris
onment for life.
Wife Murderer Shot.

Salt Lake, April 22. Frank Ross,
who, on last Christmas, murdered his
wife and then locked their 3-year-old
baby in the room with the corpse, was
shot in the prison yard here today.
Ross met his death in an indifferent
manner.

London, April 22. Port Arthur is
doomed to fall into the hands of the
Japanese with in a few days. Suoh Is
the tenor of a dispatch to the Times
from Niu Chwang today. The dispatch
says that Admiral Togo has succeeded
in blocking the port so that no Russian
warships can leave the harbor, and
that hundreds of people are hastily
leaving the town in anticipation of the
assault to he made by the Japanese
troops.
A dispatch from Port Arthur says

and not a Russian mine that caused the
destruction of the battleship Petpopav-

Henry Watterson Predicts a Great
Future For This Coast.
Portland, April 21. "If I were 20
here is where I should come," said
Henry Watterson, the veteran editor
of the Louisville Courier-Journal as he
comfortably chatted after his lecture on
Lincoln last night. "In 50 years there
will be a population of 50,000,000 in the
section of the country west of the crest
of the Rocky mountains. By that time
the dominating influence will be on the
Pacllle and not on the Atlantic coast.
"Westward is still the course of em
pire. By that time there will be one
two isthmian canals and Portland
will not be over 36 hours distant by rail
from New York. The Pacific ocean
will then be the great highway of com
merce and this magnificent section
blessed by nature, so bland in its cli -
mat and so riotously prolific, will lof -
ically come to the very forefront.

down. Other troopers Jumped Into the
fight, and Haywood was bayoneted and

sensible. A riot call was turned in, but
when the police arrived the soldiers re-

Armstrong has not yet made a demand
for the surrender of Haywood, who is
constructively under arrest in Denvw.
There is dispute as to who struck the
first blow at the depot. According to
the military, when Haywood tried to
speak to Moyer. Captain Wells told
him be could not talk to the prisoner,
and Haywood turned and struck Wells
tn the face.
Haywood's worst Injuries from his
two tights were a deep cut on the left
side of the head and one on the right
side of the head. Surgeons wern forced
to take a number of stitches In the
wounds.
General Bell says he will take Hay
wood toTelluridu as a military prisoner
if the Supreme Court sustains the gov
ernment's (Kjsition.
Secretary Iluywood was surrendered
this afternoon by General !tjll to
Sheriff Armstrong, of this county, who
served on him the warrant issued at
Telluride for his arrest on a charge of
lesecratEng the flag. He was locked
up in the county jail to await deporta-1

Mr. John Moody, a Wall Street pub
lisher, with a new book entitled, "The
Truth About the Trusts," which gives
us evon higher figures.

The fact that the Wall Stroet Jour-

attempts to justify the existence of
these trusts is of no consequence. It Is
of great Importance that nearly all of

of capitalization, are Illegal combina
tions and would probably bosodeclared,
if they were brounht to tho bar of jus
tice. Our easy-going Attorney-General,
however, got frightened when he
won a suit against one of them, really
begun by the governor of Minnesota,
and hastened to tell them that the gov
ernment was r.ot going to "run amuck1'
in Its opposition to trusts. Wall Street
interpreted this statement, and other
assurances that were said to come di
rect from the White House, to mean
that there would be no more suits be
gun against these illegal and criminal
trusts this yoar, and proceeded to put
up the prices of trust slocks. The Su
preme Court decision was given on
Monday; on the following Saturday tho
prices of these trust stocks closed high-
er than they had sold for many weeks
