here today that seventy Japanese trans.
ports have been sighted headiDg for
Kinchau, 75 miles to the rear of Port
Arthur. The landing of the Japanese
at Kinchau would Indicate the begin
ning of the investment of Port Arthur
by land.
VLADIVOSTOK THREATENED.
London, April 18. The Rome corres
pondent of the Central News telegraphs
that advices from Harbin say a squad
ron of Japanese warships have arrived
near Vladivostok. The commandant
of the town is making vigorous prepar
ations to resist attack. Worn on the
fortifications is being rushed with
feverish energy.
JAP MINE DID THE WORK.
TOKIO, April 10. The report of Vice
Admiral Togo on the seventh attack on
Port Arthur has been received hero.
He says at midnight on April 12, the
Japanese sunk mines otT Port Arthur.
At 8 o'clock the next morning he with
drew his ships 15 miles out. The Rus
sian battleship Petropavlovsk" struck
one of the Japanese mines. '
SEVASTAPOL STILL AFLOAT.
St. Petersburg, April 1(1. Viceroy
Alexieff took over the command of the
Russian fleet at Port Arthur this after
noon and raised his flag on board the
battleship Sevastopol.
VESSEL WASDAMAGED.
St. Petf.rshuro, April 10. It is
stated here tonight that tbe battleship
Sevastopol was seriously damaged in
yesterday's bombardment at Port Ar
thur. The naval reserves are report
ed called out.
Murderer Attempts Suicide.

Foster announced that Mad Mullah had
been routed and that military opera

Baseball team of the State League
demonstrated in the practice games
last Saturday and Sunday, with the
High School and A. O. U. W. nines,
that he has pennant winning material
in the men he has signed for the com
ing season. Every player gave a good
account of himself and barring unfor
seen mishaps the team has good pros
nects of finishing first In the race.
The Italian Band of Portland was
greeted hy a very light audience at the
theatre in Roseburg Saturday night.
Despite the slim attendance, the band
played nearly all tbe selections of their
regular program. It Is easily the
finest band in the state and is to be re
gretted that they were given evidence
that the greater portion of Roseburg
theatre goers will not patronize such
an organization of real, artistic merit
as readily as they do the colored min
strel troupes which., occasionally : ap
pear here.

Carnegie has created a fund of $5,000,
000 for the benefit "of the dependents
of those losing their lives In heroic
efforts to save thetr fellow-men, or for
the people themselves, if injured only."
Provision is also made for medals to
be given in commemoration of heroic
acts. 1
The endowment is to be known as the
"hero fund," and consists of 85,000,000
of tlrst collaterals per cent bond ofs the
United States Steel Corporation. Tte
trust Is placed in the hands of a com
mission. The Held embraced by the fund Is
the United States and Canada and
waters thereof.

The farmers of Dixonville and vicin
ity are through- sowing their snring
grain and are now preparing their corn
ground.
E. Hatfield Is preparing his ground
for corn. He is the boss corn man In
Douglas county.
Iloward Ward, of French Settlement,
passed through Dixonville on his way
to Glide where he expected to purchase
some beef cattle.
Harry Williams was recently seen on
the streets of Dixonville looking for
work horses to do bisspring plowing.

Ed. Downs, of Gardinor, the sawmill
man, was looking after his interests on
Kast Umpqua last week. He contem
plates putting up a sawmill.
The ladies of North Deer Creek have
begun to canvass for the telephone line
from Dixonville to Roseburg. There
is no doubt now that it will be a sue-
cess.
Some people of Dixonville have
turned their cattle on the public high
way to rustle fur a living.
Owing to the prospect of a telephone
line, the price of real estate ut Dixon
ville and vicinity is increasing very
rapidly. Mr. Lagrevy has here-to-fore
been asking $2,000 for his place but
has now raised to $3,000.
The ball given at the Dixonville hall
was very largely attended by the youug
folks, and a very enjoyable time was
had.
Mr. Louis Sinick is making some
substantial improvements in tne way

Examinations Were Conducted Last
Week tor Diplomas From
Public Schools.
On the 13, 14 and 15 of this month final
examinations for 8th grade diplomas
from the public schools were hold
throughout Douglas county. The ex
amiuations were conducted by school
teachers, aissisted by chairmen of the
dilTerent boards of directors, and under
the supervision of County School Supt.
F. B, Hamlin. There were 107 appli
cants. The names of the successful
' ones will be announced as soon as all
papers have been inspected by the
superintendent, who is being assisted
' by Prof. J. E. Patterson, of Gardiner.
I Ten subjects comprised the exami
nation, and an applicant to receive a
diploma must satisfactorily pass in all
I of them. It the applicant falls in only
two subjects he or she will have an
opportunity to try again on these two
subjects at the next regular examina
tion. Should the applicant fall in more
than two subjects, the examination will
have to be taken again in its entirety.
Examinations will be)held again in May
and June of this year.
A diploma entitles its holder to enter
the IHh grade of any public school In
the state or any of the higher state
institutions.

Conductor Norman Hurt.
Concerning tbe raising of the block
ade in the Siskiyous last Friday, the
Ashland correspondent of the Portland
Telegram writes as follows:
"Conductor Albert Normau,who waa
in charge of a through freight train,
that tlrst discovered the blockade, was
running a southbound train when it waa
encountered. Returning to Ashland
with his train he immediately went out
with a work train. While placing tor
pedos on tbe track to warn approaching
trains, he was seriously injured by aa
explosion. Roth legs were badly cut.

he was taken to the hospital at Ashland
for care. While the injury is not con
sidered dangerous, there is fear of blood
poison from such an injury."
