oleven cars of fruit on hand but expect
to dispose of all of it soon. Mr. H. S.
Gile, who is now in the east, writes
that the packing1 done in Roscburg is
unexcelled anywhere. The prune
market continues very unsettled, so he
writes.

How desolate and uninviting would
be the world were, it not for the trees.

summer bent and the cold winter. The
lields and hillsides freed from the roots
of trees and shrubs are exposed to the
erosive power of rains and floods. Kob

Destroy the forests, and the parching

woods in early autumn, when the

leaves. The sighing in the tree-tops
and the rustle of the dead leaves bring
back the memories of childhood. But
how important is the oflice of the dead

matting over the roots of the trees, re
taining the moisture, shutting out the
frost or excessive heat, and so promote
growth by preserving an even tempera
ture. Surely wisdom is displayed in
all of Nature's ways. How refreshing
is the shade of a leafy tree in the mid
day heat ofa summer sun; how comfort
ing is the protection of a barrier of
trees against the wintry winds: and so
in the kingdom of plant life has Nature
ministered to our wants by supplying
food and clothing and shelter, and

fill our days with health and gladness.
Every highway should be graced with
thrifty trees; the waste places of our
domain should be covered with the
native trees of the forest; every home
should be within an encircling grove;
and every little child should be taught
to venerate the tree which stands as a
mediator between him and the crude
elements of the world, and is typical of
that higher mediation of Christ between
man and God. There are many anal
ogies between a treeless country and
a Christless life.
