tree. The grass, the herb, the shrub,
the tree the most ancient classification
occupies a place of peculiar interest
and dignity in the kingdom of Nature.
In vegetation tlrst apjeared the essence
of life. It stands as a mediator between
tho lower mineral kingdom and the
higher kingdom of animal life, a
mediator between the living and the
dead. Who shall explain to us the
mystery of Nature's chemistry by
which the delicate rootlets dissolve the
inorganic minerals of tho earth, and
the leaves decompose nod absorb the
carbonic acid taken from the surround
ing air? Who shall explain to us the
hidden processes by which plants
breathe, and assimilate, and perspire,
and sleep? Vastly Important to us aro
are all the functions of the plants.
They take up the poisonous gases and
replenish the air we breathe with the
blood purifying oxygen. They trans
form the crude elements of earth and
air and sunshine into food to nourish
our bodies. They spread a mantle of
bright tintsover the dull landscape and
gladden the heart. How restful to the
eye is the vision of green Ileitis, how
soothing to weary minds are the whis
pering leaves, and the fragrance of the
woods Nature's lullabies.
History records the story of many
notable trees. Mount Lebanon is
known from early Hihlical times for its
j famous cedars. In 100(1 there wore six
: teen venerable cedars that measured
more than thirty feet in circumference,
j Tho famous banyan tree of Ceylon is on
: Mount Lavinia, seven miles from
Colombo. Two roads wind between its
many stems, and Its shadow at noontide
covers four acres. The great linden
in Wurtembnrg was ttoo years old when
it fell in the gale of The grand
old tree, which Inspired the poet's
muse, was more than 37 feet in girth.
In the Haider Valley, near Balaklava,
Utands a giant walnut tree which Is
j I'JOO years old. It Is owned by several
1 'IVrtnr families, who gather from It,
some years, neany a hum! ml thousand
j wa nuts.
j The Old World has its venerable
trees, but none less notable arc some of
the giants of the New. What school
child does not know the story of the
Treaty Kim, on the banks of tho Dela
ware, beneath whose boughs William
Penn signed his treaty with the Indian?
In ltiSJ? it perished In 120. Who
does not venerate the Chartor Oak in
Hartford, which was the hiding place
ftr the Charter of ihe Colony for
several years? And long will It be re
