Washington, March 29. The infor
mation has reached certain administra
tion officials that the interests repre
sented in the Northern Securities com
pany, recently declared by the United
States supreme court to be an illegal
combination in restraint of trade and
competition, are formulating tentative
plans for the organization of a giant
merger of all trunk lines and other
railroads, in the United States. The
new organization, when properly con
stituted, it is said, will take the name
of either the "American Securities'
company" or the "National Securities!
company."

basis of this new merger is found in the
decision of the United States supreme
court, which, while denouncing the
Northern Securities company, largely
on the ground of Us having been
formed to destroy all competition be
tween two rival railroads, did not go to
the extent of abridging the right of
any individual or group of individuals
to secure control of various railroad in
terests. The news of the forthcoming merger
is of such character here, as for the
moment to cause the interest in the
Harriman-Hlll fight over the distribu
tion of the erstwhile Northern Securi
ties stock, to sink into second place.
It is even regarded as possible that the
formation of a new merger may recon
cile Hill and Harriman, both of whom
are believed to be interested largely In
the new undertaking. ,

Local Baseball Team Begins

Improvements to be Made on Grounds
at Rose Park Will Insure
Faster Games,
Work on the baseball ground at
Rose Park is to begin in a few days,
preparatory to team practice which
begins April 14th. The big 7-ton
roller, used in the street Improvement
work here, will bo hauled over the
rough ground in the outtiiold and loose
dirt will be distributed in the hoh?B
until that portion of the ground Is prac
tically level. Special attention will be
given to the infield. Last year inlleld-
ers could not play back of the lines
because of the danger of turning an
ankle. This year plenty of dirt applied
with attentive work will give tho In
fielders plenty of playing margin hack
of the lines. In all, when the improve
ment work is completed, the grounds
will bo 50 per cent better than they
were last year. About 75 loads of loose
dirt will be hauled to the ground.
PRACTICE II KG INS SOON.
Two weeks from today the locals will
settle down to hard practice. Of the
men whom Manager Morrow has signed
for the coming season, there are here,
besides himself, Pitcher Hunter, Sec
ond Baseman Nadler, Third Baseman
Bradley and Outfielders Robinson,
Miller and Mlllington. A day or two
before practice begins, the remainder
of the team will arrive. These are
Pitchers Reed and Gregory and Short
stop Newell, now in Portland, and the
Oswell Brothers, catcher and out
fielder, respectively, now In San Fran
cisco. A NEW PITUHKR.
Manager Morrow has signed Pitcher
Chas. Bilyeu, of Albany, to fill the
vacancy caused by tho death of Fred
Taliafero. This news will bo recolved
with delight by the local fans, for &
better twirler could not have been
secured outside of the Coast League.
Bilyeu was practically the mainstay of
of the Albany toam of the Willamette
Valloy League last year. Whenover
Bilyeu was In the box, no mat tor if
Albany lost, the scoro of the opposing
team was always very small. With
the stronger support which will be
given him this year, he should prove
a winner. Bo will report for practice
at the proer time.
SEASON OPENS IN APRIL
The playing season will open on
April 28th, with Itoseburg at Salem
and Vancouver at Eugene.

School Supt. Hamlin is sending out
to all the school districts of the county,
pamphlets published by J. U. Acker
man, superintendent of public Instruc
tion, entitled "Arbor Day." Tho
manual is designed to furnish sugges
tive material for the proper observance
of the day and to call attention of the
need of awakening an Interest on the
part of parents and pupils In tho Im
portance of beautifying the surround
ings of our schools and homes. Arbor

Takes Charge Tomorrow.
Thos. C. Bloomer, tho now proprietor
of the Hotel McClallen, and Sam
Bugger, who will be mixologist in the
establishment, returned this morning
from Portland, where thoy selected a
new and handsome sot of bur fixtures.
These fixlnros have arrived and will
be installed at once. All arrangements
for transferring tho business of tho
hotel have been completed and tomor
row the new proprietor will take
charge. In addition to the changes in
the personnel of tho clerical force
already announced, Ollie Kowell, of
Albany, will succeed Ed, T. Naghel
Like Mr. Bugger and Bert Wcstbrook,
the new day clerk, Mr. Howell, is a
good musician and formerly belonged
to the Albany band. The addition of
these three gentleman to the musical

band.
Mr. Kaghol will probably engage In
business in this city at least that is
the hope of his friends, and they area
legion. In whatever business' he
enters he is assured of an abundant
share of patronage. At present he will

Child Nearly Hangs Five Men.
Chicago, March 29. A child's testi
mony reversed save five men today from

by the state's attorney, the five men
walking out of the dock free by order
of the court.
