is a large number of well-to-do people
in Douglas county who are professional
tax evaders, and it is my purpose here
in to show up, nutia foreign tongue,
but in plain Knglish Irngmige, the
downright criminality of this scheming,
cheating and parasitic portion of our
population. Ad investigation of the
completed tux rolls presents, to say the
least, an asuoishing condition of all airs.
Pei'soos who are looked upon and who
are, poor people, are found to be puy
ing heavier tuxes than some of our
eupital:sts. Won who are generally
known to bo worth many thousands,
are paying on a less number of hum
reds. A close Investigation will dis
close the fact that, piOj)oriionately, the
poor people are raying the Uddler
while their rich neighbors are doh.'g
the dancing; that the poor are Ifeepin
up the ex pen ros of stute, couni.t and
e vader has made a solemn oath that he
has given a full and complete list of all
his property, including "money, uotes
and accounts."
Whenever one lend3 money, and
takes mortgaged property to secure the
same, the records will show it. These
records should be hunted down, and tl;e
pariies made to pay. Borrowers of
money could greatly assist the assessors
by correctly reporting a full list of
their creditors, with exact amounts.
There are many people is Douglas, as
in other counties, whose daily living
expenses, together with their ioceased
wealth, co-ne from interest paid to
them by their debt rs, but, Mr.
Reader, If you will make a list of these
monied men, and look up their taxes
on the county records, you will learn
some facts that are as astoundlug as
they are true. When taxes are equit
ably distributed, it Is as dillicuJt for
one as another. It is as much a strug
gle for the huudred dollar man to pav
his four dollars, as fortheiifty thousand
dollar man to pay bis just proportion,
or two thousand dollars. Yet, ia many
cases,' the latter will pay on a few
hundred, only, thus cheating his reign-!
bor by defrauding the administrative
government. We often hear lb re-1
marked that there is no barm in beat
ing a rail-'oad company, ot, iu evading !
taxes. Is this the sort of instruction j
we ae to bequeath to our sons and I
diughio V If so, would it not bo well
to have prepared texL-booku for ojrj
public schools, the purpose of which is
to teach how we can best lern-o t i cheat
railroad companies, aod fel Ji'd our
state, county and muricipal govern
ments? No; such instruction would
not do. Such teach:ng would quickly
