Some alleged newspapers in this
vxmnty are resorting to the most des
picable methods In an endeavor to de
liberately deceive their readers as to
the real conditions existing here at
present in regard to taxation and the
public debt. They are publishing fig
ures for one single semi-annual period
without also giving the figures both
before and after that time, so the vot
ers can see the general trend of public
affairs and know just what the present
conditions really are. It Is the duty of
every paper which claims to be an hon
est purveyor of news to publish these
iacts in full, as was done by Tub Re
view In the issue of March 3, 1004.
On that date we published the sworn
figures, as they appear on the county
records of Douglas county, for each and
every year since 18!8. This was done i
without fear or favor, let the credit or
blame fall where It may. If an alleged
newspaper attempts to deliberately de
ceive Its readers in so Important a mat
ter as this It thus proclaims its dishon
esty and will henceforth be marked as
unworthy of belief In any of its utter-!
ances. The people have no more use
for a dishonest newspaper than they
have for a dishonost ofllcial or In
dividual. That the taxpayers of Doug
Jas county are required to pay over
900,000 more of taxes this year than in
the year MtOO and that the county debt
is now over 92(1,003 more than it was
then, are undeniable matters of public
record, and,, disagreeable as these
facts are, the people have a right to
know what are the actual existing con

Dr. A. M. Patterson, formerly of this
place, and who has been In Edinburgh,
Scotland, pursuing an extensive post
graduate course In medicine, will re
turn about the middle of March to take
up the permanent practice of his pro

be glad to welcome him home.

Glendale News, March 11: E. S.
Eaton, aged about 38 years, was arrest
ed Monday by Constable Nelson Jones,
on a charge of using the U. S. malls for
fraudulent purposes. Eaton had been
working near Snyder's mill, cutting
wood, and upon his arrival in town
Monday was identified and placed
under arrest, just as he was on the eve
of his departure for Eugene.
The information upon which the
charge is based was received in a letter
from the city marshal of Lewi 9 ton,
Idaho, who sent a letter signed by E.
S. Eaton, Glendale. Oregon, offering to

bill, "which could not be told from the
genuine, for $1," and stating that "big
money could be made easy." The letter
plainly purported to offer counterfeit
money which could not be detected
from the genuine, and stated that if the
recipient was interested he could send
a money order for $1 and in return
would receive a sample 810 bill, with
full particulars and rates for wholesale
quantities.
J Eaton's defense seemed extremely
I weak, and was to the effect that he pro
' posed to furnish confederate money,
not counterfeit. In proof of his asser
'tioo he referred to a 810 confederate
i bill or Imitation of one, which the
'officer took from his person when the
search was made.
Deputy U. S. District Attorney W.
W. Hanks, Deputy Marshal Attorney
Jns. Wilson and a postal Inspector
came down from Portland and had the
prisoner examined yesterday before
Justice Montgomery, who promptly
bound him over to the federal grand
jury, with bonds placed at $200, In
default of which he was taken to Port
land last night.
Quite a number of damaging docu
ments were found in Eaton's possession,
showing that he had been a party to
wildcat schemes of this nature before.
Letters were found from women who
hadsenthlm 81 for his "nerve specific;"
from men who Inquired as to his recipe
for making "five gallons of old whisky
out of 25c worth of drugs and powders
and a quart of good whisky;" also from
parlies who desired to learn his "secret
tor matting butter from buttermilk,"
and other swindles of that nature.

Pneumonia is too dangerous a dis
ease for anyone to doctor himself, al

A negro, charged with an unmention
able crime, was taken from the jail at
Mojave, Calif., by a mob last Friday
and, while resisting the application of
a coat of tar and feathers, was killed,
either by a shot from one of the mob or
from a blow on the head with some
heavy Instrument.
At Forest Grove last Saturday, Frank
Peters, of Pacific University, won the
Oregon intercollegiate oratorical con-
tat on the subject, "The German Pa
triot." Ray Goodrich.of the University
of Oregon, took second honors with the
subject, "The Passing of Absolute
Leadership." The other institutions
were marked in the following order.
Oregon State Normal' School, Mon
mouth,, third; Oregon Agricultural
College, fourth; Willamette University;
fifth; Albany College, sixth. McMinn
ville college was debarred from rep
resentation by the executive committee
because of plagiarism discovered in
their representative'sorationlast year.
The latest figures show that more
steel is used in the manufacture of pens

Japanese Woman's Daring.
N'KW Yohk, March 11. A during
and clever feat, has been performed by
a Japanese woman who escaped from
Dalny, by means which are still
shrouded In secrecy, says a World's
dispatch from Tientsin. It is said she
secured official plans of the harbors of
Oalny and Port Arthur, took them to
Tokio. getting away simply as an ordl
nary refugee. A decoration for her
heroism Is the reported reward.

upon the property owners adjacent as
provided by the City Charter, upon the
