Russian Troops Avoid Battle

Seoul, Corea, March 12. It is re
ported here today that the Russian
troops are being continually harrassed
by the Japanese. The town of Wiju,
on the Corean side of the Yalu river,
was fired by the Russians, who then
retreated.
JAPS DID MUCH DAMAGE
St. Petershukq, March 12. Dis
couraging reports continue from the
Trans-Siberian railway. Great concern
is manifested ever the amount of dam
age done to Port Arthur in Thursday's
bombardment. It is reported that
many houses were wrecked and several
casualties occurred. The Japanese
fleet has withdrawn and the Russians
are waiting expectantly for another
attack.
Thursday's battle.
London, March 12. Another ac
count has been received here of the
fierce naval engagement which took
' place between the Russian and Japan
ese torpedo boat flotillas off Port Ar
thur Thursday. The account says the
Russians withdrew, leaving a orlppled
and sinking torpedo boat in the bands
of the enemy. Besides the crew which
went down with the vessel, the Rus
sian casualties, all told, were three
killed and twenty-six wounded, in
cluding four officers.

Suicide at Junction.
Junction City, Or., March 11.
Mrs. Frank T. Llewellyn, aged about 35
years, committed suicide here this
morning at 8 o'clock by swallowing
carbolic acid.
The family was at breakfast when the
act was committed.
The woman had been sick for ten
days, but was rapidly recovering and it
was thought she would soon be entirely
well. There was no known cause for
the act, unless she had become despond
ent over her sickness.
Mrs. Llewellyn nevdr spoke a word
after taking the poison and died in half
an hour. She leaves a husband and
two children.
Burgess Catching Released.
Burgess Catching, the .15-yoar-old
boy who plead guilty to a charge of
larceny before Justice Buchanan Thurs
day, was released from jail this morn
ing and turned over to the custody of
his cousin, Geo. Yokum, of Riddle.
The charge against the boy was not
dismissed, but sentence has been sus
pended Indefinitely, pending the keep
ing of his promise to be a better boy
hereafter. Yokum was the person to
whom the boy gave $15 of the stolen
money. The boy stated that he took
the money 20 in all to pay his trans
portation expenses to where his father
is located In California, and the $15
which he gave to Yokum was to be
used toward purchasing a railroad tick
et. Of the renmlnlnj $5 the boy bad
Bpent $1.50 and $3.h0 was still in his
possession. Fortunatoly Mr. iofcum
had not purchased the ticket and he
produced the $15 in court this morning;
he also advanced the amount which the
boy had spent and this, together with
the money remaining in the boy's pos
session, made up the full amounttaken.
Mr. Yokum promised to see that the
boy would be sent to bis father.

tractor H. Snook after a thorough In-
spectlon of the building this afternoon,
This conclusion was concurred in by

tlemen made the Inspection pursuant to
a request from the city school directors,
who were notified a few days apo that
the council had declared the building
unsafe and that If the school children
housed therein should meet with any in
juries by reason of the building collaps
ing, the council would absolve itself from
any responsibility. To satisfy them
selves as to whether the school children
were In any danger, the directors In
stituted the Inspection.

Gentlemen: We, the uudersigned,
your committee appointed to examine,
the city hall building, and make report
j concerning the safety of said building,
beg to report tnat we nave careiuuy
examined the building, and It is our ,
opinion that at the present time the
building Is perfectly safe, and In no
danger of collapsing on account of be
ing used for school purposes. It is our
opinion that the cracks In the outer
walls have been caused by the settling
of the building, through insufficient
foundation at the outer walls, while
the center or cellar walls have a solid
foundation and have not settled corres
pondingly. We would advise that the
front and north side of the building be

arches, and inserting proper bolts
throughout the two sides. We would
further recoinneud that the fire-bell be
removed from the tower of said build
ing, Inasmuch as the excessive vibra
tion caused by the ringing of the bell
will have a tendency to rack and
cause the further spreading of the said

Mrs. Cal. Harper Is very Blck this
week with pneumonia.

Mr. and Mrs Frank Hill, a 10 pound

Mrs. S. R. Miller went to Koseburg
Monday for a week's visit at the home
of her daughter, Mrs. Jesse Clements.
Her little son, Richard, accompanied
her,
A son was born on Tuesday, March
8th, to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. Win
chell, of Windy creek.
After a brief Illness, Miles A. Holmes
died In Glendale yesterday of cirrhosis
of the liver. The burial took place
today. The deceased was a native of
Missouri and was fi5 years of age. He
leave an aged mother and one brother,
Simon D. Holmes, of this place, to
mourn his death,
Mr. S. P. Klseth and his son, Peter,
arrived this week from Climax, Minn.,
with the expectation of locating in this
section. A number of their friends
from that state are expected here this
spring.

Details of Fatal Slide.
The snowslide In the Cornucopia
mining district, in Baker county,
Thursday evening, which killed A. C.
("Cam") Cox, formerly of Roseburg,
also killed another man and injured
six others, none of them fatally. The
Buker City correspondent of the Port
land Telegram gives the following ac
count of the accident:
The crash came at 5:30 when the
miners were coming off shift. It razed
the building and bunknouses and swept'
the ocoupants down almost to the bot
tom of the Canyon, hundreds of feet
below. The dead and Injured were re
covered with dillloulty from the debris.
The mine is located In the Bonanza
Basin, ono mile from the spot where
Superintendent Fred C. Dobler, of the
Cornucopia mine, lost his life in a slide
a year ago. The snow In the basin was
from 10 to 100 feet deep.
The slide started midway between
the Queen of the West mine and the
summit, gathering mass and momen
tum as it thundered down the precip
itous escarpments of the mountain.
With a treinendoua roar the avalanche
struck tho surface plant of the mine
and in the twinkling of an aye all that
was left to mark the spot was a tiny
ortice occupied by Superintendent Bert
Smith. Below the mine the mountain
side is less steep, and the slide partly
lost its momentum, to which fact is at
tributed tbe saving of the lives of 12 of
the 14 who made the wild ride on top
of the slide.
Every winter an avalanche In Cornu
copia country claims victims. The
heavy snowfall and steepness of the
mountains make the safety of the min
ers Impossible.
All over the Blue mountains this
year slides have occurred, with heavy
property loss, but Thursday was the
am lost of life.

here Friday evening. Tho question
