FACTS ABOUT TAXATION An industrious effort is being1 mado in certain quarters to befog the minds of the people of Douglas county in regard to the enormous increase in taxation this year over any former year. The object is to create the im pression that there has been but little, jf any, real increase in the burdon placed upon the taxpayers. Such an instance occurs in the last issue of the local political organ. Referring to Tiik Kkvikw's recent statement that the taxpayers of Douglas county are required to pay over 840,000 more of i taxes this year than In 1002, the Plain- dealer says: Several years ago, while the demo crats were running the county affairs, and like every other county fn the United States where the democrats control, there was a system of graft ing not dreamed of by the poor, igno rant constituents of the Rkvikw, but woll known to the wideawakes. Vast sums of money were paid the Rk vikw concern for supplies, and grafts of every kind were foisted upon the public, and not being concent with fquandering ail the money in sight and leaving a dilicit In the treasury, the county was run headlong into debt, and the republican administration have not only to pay current expenses, but the tax payers have to pay up out of tho liMII taxes $15,000 of debt contract ed and expended on every specious scheme of plunder that a corrupt demo cratic ring could conceive of to bleed an unsusecting public. The excess of state taxes required to be raised by law for lf4 over 11)02 amounts to $13,020. The excess of school taxes required to be raised by law for 11H4 ovor 11)02 amounts to 813, iH)7. Total $27,020. Now, If we UiKo the total of 927,02(1 and the $15,000 of democratic plunder, debt, it makoH a total of $42,020, or an actual saving of $2,020 for the running expenses of the county, instead of an excess of $40,013 or more, according to the RKVIKW'h figures, To show to the taxpayers the brazen falsity of the Plaindoaler's statements wo give the following figures from tlio sworn statements of the county officials. These are from the county records and can be verified by anyono who cares to call at the court house and look them over. It is for the voters to detormine whether any change in these conditions shall be made. The necessity Is urgent. Riddle News. John Wilson, brother of P. A. Wil son, was down from Pendleton a few days this week, visiting with relatives and friends. Our streets are now lighted with lamps and the town is much improved thereby. J. Q. Gilbert spent Sunday In Riddle. The high waters of the last few weeks have put the county roads in this vicinity in a bad condition. If the weather will permit, Rev. Loree will baptize several persons In the river Sunday afternoon at 3:30. Will Q. Brown is expected, home from Idaho in a few days. He writes the snow there is 10 feet deep, in the Buffalo Hump district. Geo. K. Quine went to Roseburg one day last week to purchase a line team ' mules, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wonacott, of Hoquiam, are spending a month's vaca tion with Mr. Wonacott's father, at Glenbrook farm. Mrs. Aaron Sackett has returned from a visit to Central Point. Geo. Humes is visiting with the fam ily of S. H. Russell, at Melrose, at the present writing. Mr. and Mrs. Noah Cornutt have moved on the Lytle place to live, and will occupy the house which was owned by John Yokura. J. B. Riddle expects to erect two new cottages on the lots near the Baptist church in the near future. Mr. Applehofi and C. A. Riddle, of Roseburg, are expected Friday evening to help with the band who are to play in public for the first time. Saturday afternoon Mrs. Addle Nich ols gave a tea at her lovely home, to her many lady friends at Riddle and vicinity. The alTalr was unique and informal and to Bay the ladles enjoyed it is boyond question. A very dainty lunch was served and the afternoon was spent in social chat. Miss Clara Riddle and Miss Maxlo Nichols helped Mrs. Nichols receive and to serve lunch. Those present woret Mrs. J, B. Editor Rkvikw: There appeared an article in the Plaindealer of Feb. 20th headed 4,The Drake Case." I would like space in your columns to Bay a few words in regard to the facts as I under stand them. The writer In his article states that Mr. Drake's neighbor, who owned the goats, was dissatisfied when Mr. Drake fenced his quarter section. The facts are Mr. Drake did not fence his quarter section nor any part of it. He further states the neighbor called at Drake's house in the evening and told him he bad killed two deer, had brought one fn and hung one In a tree, and that if he (Drake) would go and get it he could have it. The facts are, a section foreman on S. P. R. R. had killed the deer and told Mr. Drake to go and get it. The writer further stated that Mrs. Drake went to the neighbor's to get him to go and hunt for her husband when he did not re turn, and the neighbor refused to go. The facts are tho neighbor did go and hunted in the snow until 11 o'clock that night, and hunted the next day until five o'clock and then wrote to Glendale to secure help and did secure help, and he hunted faithfully IS days and then came to Riddle to secure help. ( During this time his wife cooked and waited on every one that came along hunting for Mr. Drake. j The writer further states that any j direction Mr. Drake could have gone i he could have came out to the river or ; railroad in two hours. This is not ! true. When Mr. Drake went after the deer, had he came down on the Middle creek side and started down the creek which he naturally would If lost, he could not have traveled to the mouth of Middle creek the same day. I am thoroughly acquainted with this sec- j tion of the country and know what I am ! talking about. I The man Mr. Editor refers to in this I case is a gentleman of high standing, j and the last man la that part of the country that would commit a crime of that nature. The Editor has been , pretty hasty heretofore Id accusing in- i nocent parties of such crimes, and some day he may accuse the wrong man one who will call him to account for it. The facts are, Mr. Editor has two or three different yarns mixed up, has the wrong man with the deer, the wrong man with the fence, and we, as citizens, think we have the wrong man with the Plaindealer.
