' STRUGGLE AT PORT ARTHUR Is Growing Harder and the Defenders Are Urged to Fight For Their Lives. Special to Evening Review. ' St. Petersburg, Feb. 29. It is re ported here that on Saturday night the Japanese fleet made another spirited attack on Port Arthur and succeeded in sinking two more Russian war ves sels and a torpedo boat. The report Is unconfirmed, but color is given It by a laterdlspatch from Port Arthur which .states on good authority that General Stoessel, commander ot the forts, issued orders this morning directing the attention of the troops and inhabi tants to the fact that the Japanese in tend to land at Port Arthur within the next 48 hours and seize the fortress. He also called attentiou to the recent outslaughts made by the Japanese and Intimated that the Russian Beet now in the harbor Is not able to fully protect against the Impending danger. All are urged to fight to the death, if necessary, as otherwise none can be saved. He says reports are loud in the opinion that China is a low secret ally of Japan and will soon be an open one. Special to Evening Review. Portland, Feb. 29. The steamer Anne, Captain Cousins, which arrived at Seattle Sunday, came near meeting total destruction on her voyage. While running on the high seas, thirty miles off Tillamook Rock, a fire broke out In the lower part of the vessel. VLADIVOSTOK, RUSSIA'S ICEBOUND HARBOR IN SIBERIA. They broke imp a refrigerator car of a a northbound freight train at Riddle last Sunday and apparently satisfied their hunger with oranges in the car, judging from a great mass of peelings strewn about. They wore discovered by Brakeman J. A. Armstrong, who kept them covered with a revolver all the way to Roseburg where they were placed under arrest. In court the hobos pleaded not guilty to stealing the oranges, and for lack of sufficient evidence, the charge was not pushed. FOUR CLUBS Oregon State. Baseball League is Organized. ONE WASHINGTON TOWN IN Circuit Comprises Vancouver, Salem, Eugene and Roseburg Four Games A Week. Sal cm, Feb. 27. The organization of the Oregon State Baseball League was closed at a meeting tonight with a membership of four teams Salem, Eu gene, Roseburg and Vancouver. The board of directors consists of P. H. Sroat, president; H. H. Olinger, Salem: F. L. Dushane, Eugene; W. E. Morrow, Roseburg, and E. P. Prebler, Van couver. W. N. G a Lens, of Salem, has been elected secretary. The board of directors decided upon a schedule of four games a week for each team during the season, beginning May 1 and ending September 15. The schedule of games will probably be made up tomorrow. The league has applied for member ship In the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, and wilt secure the protection of that associa tion, under whose rules no player can be taken away during the season with out the consent of the league, nor at the end of the season without the pay ment of 8200. The rules of the National association wilt be strictly followed, and a record of each player will be carefully kopt. Each team will be limited to 11 men after June 1, after which date no changes can be made without the con sent of the entire board. The Southern Pacific Company has made the league a rate of one fare for the round trip for players, and General Passenger Agent Coman has given as surance that excursions will be given whenever the circumstances will per mit. The schedule will be arranged so mat two games will be played in the best-paying towns on the three holidays Decoration day, Fourth of July and Labor day. Nothing more has been seen of the body that floated down the river past Uoseburg, last Saturday. Rumors that the body bad been apprehended Sunday led Coroner Twitchell to make inquiries over telephone down the riv er and he ascertained the body had not been found. Parties are still on the watch at different places along the stream. This afternoon Coroner Twitchell started four men down the river, In two boats, to make a thorough search for the body. The boats will keep on op- . posite sides of the river and not a nook wm be missed. 11 necessary, tne searchers will go as far as Umpqua Ferry, working only during the day. Coroner Twitchell advances the opin ion that the body is somewhere this side of the Curry place, about six miles down the river, as a close watch has been kept there ever since two hours after the body passed here, and noth Ing has been seen of It.
