JAPS DRIVEN BACK v Another Attack on Port Arthur Has Proven Un successfulRussian Fleet There Is Active. THWARTED A JAPANESE ATTEMPT TO BLOCKADE HARBOR St. Peteksbubq, Feb. 25. Authen tic reports reached here last night that a big battle was raging at Port Arthur. At one time 23 Japanese war vessels were cross-firing on the Russians. The ruse attempted by the Japanese was foiled, however. The Japs at tempted to sink several stone-laden vessels at the entrance of the harbor at Port Arthur and thus prevent the Rus sian fleet from getting out. The boats were discovered by the watchers and a Russian battleship destroyed them but side the harbor. ANOTHER BATTLE TODAY. A Bulletin here today says that the Japanese were apparently not deterred by the failure of tbelr attempt to block ade the entrance to the harbor of Port Arthur. Their fleet again made an at tack there at three o'clock this morn ing, but were repulsed at every point, according to advices telegraphed by Gen. Plug. His dispatch states that .details of the engagement will be for warded later. So far, the damage to the Japanese vessels is unknown. BATTLE IS SPIRITED. Paris, Feb. 25. A dispatch from St. Petersburg says fresh fighting Is going on at Port Arthur between Admiral Togo's fleet and the Russian forts and battleships. The engagement Is very spirited. japs claim the victory. London, Feb. 25. It Is believed here tbat instead of a Russian victory at Port Arthur, another successful feat has been accomplished by the Japanese in partly bottling up what Is left of the Russian fleet, and that Russians did for the Japanese what Japs intended doing for themselves by sinking four mer chant ships In the mouth of the harbor. RUSSIANS CAPTURE COAL SHIPS. Suakim, Egyp, Feb. 24.-The captain of the British steamer Luristan (from Newport, February 5, for Bombay) re ports that he was stopped and examined by Krssian torpedoboat destroyers a few miles south of Daedalus Island, in the Red Sea, who informed him that three British steamers, laden with coal for Japan, had been captured by them. STORY NOT OFFICIAL. St. Petersburg, Feb. 24. It ap pears that the announcement from Port Arthur (that four Japanese battle ships and two Japanese transports had been sunk in a fresb attack on Port Arthur), was given out as official by m Utake. St. Petersuuro, Feb. 2.1. The Jap anese who were hanged by Russians in Manchuria for attempting to blow up the railroad bridgo over the Sangarl river were disguised -as coolies. In quiry revealed that they were Japan ese officers of the general stafT, namely, Colonel Assasl, Lieutenants Zenoloias cha and Kacurta. They were at once banged from the girders of the bridge. PRESUMABLY FOR THE ORIENT. Genoa, Feb. 23. The cruiser Brook- Drama at Winston's. Chicago, Feb. 24. A dispatch to the Tribune from El Paso, Tox., says: It has just become known here that the Wells, Fargo Express Company was robbed of 9110,000 two weeks ago at Irapuato, Mexico. Details are lacking. Superintendent' Christenson, of San Francisco; Superintendent Davis, of El Paso, and several deputies, are now at Irapuato, endeavoring to run down the missing coin and locate the thieves. Collision On the Elevated. New York, Feb. 24. At least 20 persons were Injured, Ave seriously, in a collision last night on the Brooklyn Rapid Transit elevated line In East New York. In the panic that followed the crash many passengers were se verely cut and bruised while trying to escape from the cars.
