Miss Ruth Colwell, an out-bound paBsongor on Wednesday's stage, was eoroute for Drain where she goes to remain indefinitely. , Mrs. Emma Guthrie, wife of D. E. I Guthrie, died at her home on.Flvemile i creek, about ten miles north of this place, Thursday morning. She leaves a husband and five children to mourn her loss. The remains were buried at the Fivemlle cometery. We are in receipt of a letter from MissAnna Oglesby of Cottage Grove, in which she informs us that her father, Dr. Oglesby, has received the appoint ment of health otllcer at this port and that he and his family are intending to move here about March the first. Pat and Pete Cowan, who last week received the sad news of the death of their sister, Miss Josie Cowun, of Marsh field, but who died while visiting with relatives on H umbo It bay, left by Tuesday's south-bound stage for Marsh- field to be present at the burial which was to have taken place in that city Thursday. Miss Josie, age 21 years, the youngest of the Cowan children, was born at Sulphur Springs, on Smith river, and was well known here. To denounce the writer as an assassin and a moral coward, and a seal la wag, is certainly, to draw It mild, uncalled for. But, notwithstanding the violent de nunciations of the Plaindealer, the fact remains that at the republican conven tion two years ago money was used to buy seats in the convention aDd the exposure of the scheme led to the effort to legislate punishment for that kind of a crime, and the attempt failed because Mr. Mursters did not call up the bill In the senate. No doubt he has good and sufficient reasons for not doing so and it seems strange that his conduct in failing to call up the measure cannot be adverted to without calling down upon the head of the unfortunate writer all of the harsh adjectives in the vo cabulary of the editor of the Plain dealer. This matter of corrupting conven tions by the use of money Is certainly of considerable importance to the citi zens of Douglas county. It cannot be possible that the editor of the Plain dealer is not in favor of punishing peo ple who engage in that kind of business. Does he think a man is an assassin, a moral coward and a scallawag because he complains that a member of the legislature failed to perform a duty which he owed to his constituents by making vote buying a crime? Why all this display of bad language, why this heat? Do os simply calling the atten tion of the people to the public record on the subject of corrupting conven tions hurt some one? Is there someone guilty of this offense who Inspires this vicious and ungentlemanly language on the part of the editor? It does not matter whether the writer of the article signed "Itepublican" is a republican, a democrat, a populist, or a relic of the old A. P. A. organization which attempted to control politics in KmTou IIkvikw: Under the head of A Political Scallawag," the 1'lnln dealer denounces the writer of the ar ticle In a recent Issuo nf Tiik IIkvikw, signed "A Itepublican", as a "mural coward and an assassin who strikes In the dark." Why this denunciation and all of these adjectives is somewhat strange, j There was nothing lit the article re- ferred to but a simple statement of facts, and facts which the Plaindealer neither attempts to deny or explain, and which would be useless to under-! take to do because they are a matter of record. The writer of the article which calls forth all these harsh names Is neither an assassin nor a moral cctward. Ho ha made no attack Hn any one, and i has done nothing but call public atten tion to the fact that thero Is no law on the statute books to punish bribery and j vote buying in conventions, and ho! simply stated that such n measure was Introduced and pansed the house at the 1 last session of tho legislature, and that the measure fulled in tho senate bo-1 -cause Mr. Markers did not call it up. The buying of votes, and the bribery of del egates in a convention is not a political question, and it matters not whether it occurs in a republican or a democratic conventlon,honest men should denounce It, and honest legislators should legis late against it, and they will when they get the chance. The editor of the Plaindealer is a re cent arrival in Oregon and he is not fully advised as to the occurrences of two years ago, and for his edification and Information he Is Informed that the case of the vote buying referred to in "Republican's" former article is not the only case wherein fraud was at tempted. Fred Weatherly was not the only man approached with a proposi tion to buy his vote, and it was cur rently reported and generally believed that a gentleman appeared in conven tion with proxies from a certain pre cinct in which no primary was held at all.
