Washington, Feb. 23. Advices re
ceived here today confirm the report
that the Japanese have gained another
victory at Port Arthur. Japanese war
ships entered the harbor by using
Russians signals and destroyed four of ',
the enemy's torpedo boats.
GIVING UP POKT ARTHUR.
London, Feb. 23. It is now definite
ly known that the Russians have de
cided that Port Arthur is untenable
and are tran9ferringtbeir headquarters
from that place to Harbin, a point con
siderably further north. Reports say
that Japanese and Russian troops are
still being rushed to northern Korea
and Manchuria. It is understood that
the Japs will strike their blows early
as they fear the Immense army of Rus
sia troops concentrating In Manchuria.

St. Petersburg, Feb. 21. The ap
pointmentof General Kouropatktn, who
was yesterday relieved of his functions
as minister of war, to the chief com
mand of the Russian army in the far
east, was gazetted this morning.
With the possible excepttou lot Gen
eral Dragomiroff, formerly novernor
general of Kieff and later member of
the council of state, General Kouropat
kin is the most popular-man In the
Russian army. As a blulT old soldier
who has fought his way up from the
bottom to be minister of war, he Is the
ideal of the enlisted men.

The matter was this morning referred
to Inspector Clark, of Walla Walla,
and hi? decision is now awaited. The
advertisement referred to a suit club
being formed, where a suit Is won on a
little money if the proper card Is
drawn. )
The paper was running a guessing
contest, giving a buggy a,s a premium,
but It took that out two days ago. Tie
publishers claim that the suit adver-
tisoment does not represent a lottery
scheme.
Loss Far Over-estimated.
Baltimork, Feb. 22. The Baltimore
Underwriter prints a list of all the fire
Insurance companies involved In the
Baltimore lire. The total loss Is $;I2,
St'4.WK), ol which H,000.noo falls on the
IihmI compantrs. The- estimated total
ofsilvagc Is $l,"C!i,700, which leaves a
net loss to the Insurance companies of
931,095,100.
It has been learned that many of the
large wholesale dry goods houses
formed an insurance pwl among them
selves, which amounted to about $.", 000,
000, from which practically nothing
will be realized. Another develop
ment Is that very few of the tenants of
the so-called fire-proof building carried
any insurance.

and 12 days.

Fisk Jubilee Singers,
Eight times since Its organization
this company has crossed the Atlantic,
not to mention ocean trips to Bermuda,
to Newfoundland and to the West In
dies. On their last extended trip
abroad, in 1800, thuy visited Germany,
Holland, Switzerland, Denmark, Nor
way, Sweden and Russia. In Leipzig,
the center of 'musical culture In Ger
many, they gave nine public concerts,
In Amsterdam, eleven; In Berlin, nine
teen; In Hamburg, twenty-four, and In
Stockholm fifty which last was tho
crown sheaf of thotr musical achieve
ment. In at. Petersburg thoy gave a
charity concert under the patronage
of the Czarina. In all these great cap
itals the audiences were captivated by
the tender beauty of the melodies,
though few understood the character of
the songs as indicated by their titles.
So true It Is that music Is the universal
language.

moved to the old Webber place to live.

Have Slipped Ninety-one Carloads of
Prunes and Disbursed
About $82,000.
On Monday evening, Feb. 22, the
Douglas County Fruit Packing Co.
tinished packing prunes for the season,
after a run of over four months. The
last cars will be loaded at their pack
ing house lu North Roseburg and
shipped east Wednesday.
To a Review representative Mr.
Gazley, the local manager for the com-
pany, gave the following information
regarding their business here during:
the season, Their shipments from
Douglas county since last October ag
gregate 01 carloads of evaporated
prunes, for which they disbursed about
$82,000 In cash. Besides this they .
have paid out for labor, etc., over
$4700. Of the prunes handled, over 55
cars were bought and paid for on a
basis price of 3J cents per pound for 40a
to 50s, which Is about three-fourth of a
cent higher than the present prices.
PLANT TO HE ENLARGED,
Mr. Gazley further stated If there la
a good prune crop In this county the
coming season (for which the iodic a- .
tlons now are very favorable) the
Douglas County Fruit Packing Co. will
greatly enlarge their proserit plant and
practically double its capacity. They .
were very much handicapped by lack,
of room during the Beason just past.
A large, well-lighted and steam-heated
work room Is contemplated for the use
of the women and girls who assist la '
packing the fruit in the .boxes. The -
storage capacity Is also to be largely
increased, and other important features
added.
Mr. Gazley leaves In a few days for ;
his home in Oakland, California, to re
main for a few months.
