state, has filed his first annual re
port covering the period of seven
months from May 31, 1!K)3, to Decem
ber 31, 1U03, and showing the exact
amount of fees collected in his depart
ment during that period. There was a
total of 2180 corporations, foreign and
domestic filing reports and paying their
annual license foes, the total of which
-amounts to M..170.31.
With the help of 84,855 from the sale
of state land, which Douglas county
has received as Its share of the five
percentage of that fund to bo applied
only on public roads, marked improve
ment should be made on the public
highways of this county during the
present year. This fund Bhould bo
expended In a thorough, practical man
ner that will bring permanent results.

is too large to be wasted or applied
indiscriminately.
The assessors of the state of Idaho at
their recent meeting In Boise, decided
to assess certain property as follows:
On livestock, that stock cattle be as
sessed at l.r per head, milch cows at
425, beef cattle 2i5, slock sheep 2,
thoroughbred horsea 2Ti to ttiO and up
wards, range horses 110, swine W. On
real estate, for the purpose of taxation
and assessment for 1U04, the actual cash
value of real estate In the respective
counties shall be the value placed upon
real estate of each county for the year
1903 by the Btate board of equalization,
and that any and all lands not assessed
for the year 11103 shall be assessed for
the year 11104 at the same prlco as the
same quality and quantity of lands wore

Washington. Jan, 27. The presi
dent has appointed W. B. Martin to
succeed Mrs. Mfonle Cox as postmaster
at Indiaaola, Miss. This postollice was
closed some time ago, the white inhab
itants of the place refusing to accept
their mail from Mrs. Cox, who is a De
gress. Martin, who is a white man,
was one of Mrs. Cox's bondsmen.
