An elaborate writ's of experiments
was undertaken In Germany under the
auspices of the emperor over two years
to solve several problems connect
ed with electric traction. Although
these were tried on a short bit of road,
reaching from Mnrienfelrte to Zosseu
and about fourteen miles long, they

In the earlier tests a speed of nearly

The line has been equipped with the
"three phase" system nnd has throe
overhead wires, one above another.
Apparatus for taking oft the current
rises from each end of tho car and
presses sideways against the wires.
The car Itself is exceptionally stout
and strong since It has to carry not on
ly four heavy motors underneath, two
on each truck, but also an enormous
burden peculiar to those tests and not
found on other electric cars. Tho
conch Is seventy-two foot In length.
The Interior is divided Into three
compartments, with cross seats accom
modating sixty passengers. ine mid
dle room Is twenty -live feet long, nnd
the others have only half that length.
A vestibule at each end accommodates
the motorman nnd a part of the equip
ment and takes off fully six feet from
tho available length of the coach.
