BELIEVED WILL NOT AVAIL Opinion Prevails in Some Quarters That War Already Exists In the Far East. Special to Evening Review. San Francisco, Jan. 8. Cablegram received here today states that both Russia and Japan are rushing troops to Korea. All hope of averting war Is believed to be piBt. Today the Mikado reviewed 26,000 troops. Many war correspondents are leaving San Francisco (or the probable scene of war, and large shipments of war supplies for the Orient are being made. LONDON THINKS WAR EXISTS. London, Jan. 8. That actual war now exists between Russia and Japan is the paramount belief here, although It is said that England and France are trying to act as mediators. Last night masked robbers bound and gagged David Gates, aged 82 years, In this city and robbed him of all his savings, amounting to $700, leaving the aged victim destitute. Dietrich Acquitted. Special to Evening Review. Omaha, Jan. 8. By order of the presiding judge, the jury in the case of Senator Dietrich, charged with extort ing money from persons for whom he had secured fedoral positions, today rendered a verdict of not guilty. Chicago, Jan. 8. la the Investiga tion being made by the coroner into the Iroquois theatre disaster, Robert Murray, an employe of the theatre, to day testified that there was hardly any apparatus in the building with which to fight fire and most of that was not connected with the water system Murray also stated that many of the exits of the theatre were always barred, the ventilators had never been tested ana the asbestos curtain was operated by means of small, ill-fitting counter weights. Investigating Theatre Fire. Chicago, Jan. 7. The coroner bfr gan the examination of witnesses today on the Iroquois theatre fire disuster. The oRtcial list ot dead reported by him makes the number otto. The first list was SMI, but this was caused by the identification of bodies under more than one name. The testimony brought out today unl- STREET IMPROVEMENT NO TICE. Proposed Improvement of Stephens street. Notice is hereby given that at the meeting of the uouu oil of the city of lioeebure. Ore., held on the fourth day of January, 15HM, the following resolution was adopted. Re solved, That the council of the city of Roseburg, Or., deem it expedient and proposes to improve Stephens street from the Bchoo) house to the southern extremity of the Fourth Southorn Ad dition to the city of Roseburg, in 'the following manner, to-wlt: (1) That the street be reduced longitudinally to a uniform grade to be established by the city surveyor, (a) That the cross- section of the surface be curved from an elevation of two feetabovethe grade in tne center to edge of the gutter at each side, (it) That the sides of the street lie entrenched for gutters tj carry olT the surface drainage, with lateral gutters at convenient discharge point.. (4) That the expense of said survey and improvement be assessed upon the property owners, adjacent as provided by the city charter, uiion the proierty especially benefitted thereby. Resolved, That the Recorder of the city of Roseburg be and he- is hereby directed to give notice of the proposed survoy andimprovement of said street as provided by the city charter. The arrest of Maher and Nagel, the two workmen who nailed down the ven tilators when the building was being constructed, Is considered by the coroner to be very important, as their evidence will tend to show that the examination made by the building inspector when the theatre opened was not thorough. Burt as president was first accepted and the election of Mr. Harriman immediately followed, after which the directors ad journed. There is reason to believe that Mr. Harrlman's acceptance of the presi dency is only tomporary.
