I The Grantreville, Idaho, Free Press notes tbe fact that the first school ever j taught on Camas Prairie, where tbe : town of Grangeville is located, was in charge of Miss Blancit Reed, of Wilbur, i Douglas connty, Oregon. It was an old i log building at the town of Mt. Idaho in j the spring of 1867. Old settlers here will remember Miss Reed before she left, for Idaho. Tbe Salem Statesman issued a fine, illustrated annual edition of 60 pages on Jan. 1st. It is a valuable number and includes a fine exposition of the indus tries, resources and development of tbe great Willamette valley. On accouut of the irregular surveys of many of the townships in the Roseburg land district, it is almost impossible to locate section corners without a copy of tbe government Burvey. Frank E. Alley, abstractor, of this city, has complete set of tracingB of all surveyed townships, and will furnish blue prints of same, showing all vacant land, at one dollar each. tf. E. P. Long, who Is well remembered by many RoBeburg people, having mar ried Miss Myrtle Gillette, the young lady who was formerly employed in tbe cen tral telephone office here, has gone out of the grocery business in Cottage Grove and has re-entered the service of the S. P. Co. as a passenger brakeman, having secured an extra run out of Portland. He was greeting his many old time friends in Roseburg today. Tbe Portland Oregooian's annual edl Uon of 46 pages gives a comprehensive resume of tbe vast resources of tbe Pa cific Northwest as well as the material development thereof. Among tbe coun ties of this state Douglas is given one and one-half columns, in an able article furnished by Hon. D. S. K. Buick, of this city. The Lewis & Clark exposition for 1905 is given much attention as It is an enterprise meriting the widest pub licity. Ashland Tidings: Walter Brown and Fred Snelling, aged 17 and 16, respect ively, were drowned at noon Sunday while skating on Goose Lake, 10 miles from Lakeview. The bodies were re covered. Brown was the son of a prom inent sheep man of Lakeview, and Snell ing was an orphan and lived with a maiden aunt. They were both employed in the Lakeview Examiner office. Snell ing, whose parents have been dead a number of years, was a grandson of M'e. Kate Howell, of Ashland After an annoying and vexatious delay of two weeks, tbe Southern Oregon Oil Co., succeeded yesterday in raising to the surface the 2000 feet of wire sand line, for which they have been persistently "fishing." The wire had been coiled and kinked in knots innumerable, which made its recovery very difficult. The company is very anxious to continue drilling until it renches sea level, which is about 500 feet below the depth now attained. The stockholders' meeting and election of a board of directors occur next Tuesday and tbe management, in view of this fact, has decided lo shut down operations until tbe new board If elected.
