EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS.
A few months ago the crape nan
gers were predicting there would be
a groat amount of unemployment.
The soldiers, and muni'lon workers,
the women who took the soldiers
places, all had to he cared for, and
there couldn't be Jobs enough.
But recent reports are going all
the other way. The soldleiB an
amunltlon workers are rapidly being
employed, and women workers seem
to find plenty to do. In the wheat
belt people aie already worrying how
they are going to get the great crop
harvested. Those who are holding
back business enterprises because
thev foresee a period of depression
would seem to be fearful only of
shadows. The stock market has wit
nesscd a nronoiinced rise due to ro
vlval of confidence. It is realized
that aB quickly as peace is signed in
Europe, the pooplo over there will
demand great quantities or American
goods. Employers would do well to
realize that there imiy be a short
age of labor Instead of surplus. It
would be wise to tuke every pains
to train employees and help them
acquire efficiency and good wages.
The constant shifting of labor from
one place to another prevents work
ing people from acquiring superior!
tv In some particular line. The me
chanlc who keeps changing from
shop to shop is apt to be mediocre
while the ono who stays year after
year knows lust what the require
ments of that particular shop are and
becomes exceptionally valuable. The
same Is true of the farm worker. In
times when work is abundant and
labor seems scarce, muny worker?
feol Independent, and think thoy can
get a job anywhere. No doubt they
can. But when dull times come,
thoBe most recently hired are the
first to go. Those who have been
employed for a period of years are
the ones who Btay.

FOUR HOMES RUDELY
Four peaceful homes wore rudely
Droken up In this city shortly aft
12 o'clock Monday night and four
young hUBbands who had heretofore
"pulled covers" with their better
halveB were compelled to "go it
alone for the lonely last half of the
night. The "big four" had gathered
around the "peace table" and were
discussing grave "business" problems
of the day and their thought or
home and fireside had completely
elapsed from memory. During the
-strenuous" absence of the four
young men from their faithful wives
great plans were developing at the
other end of the line, and shortly
after midnight, these four tried and
trusty housekeepers decided to go It
alone for the balance of the night,
thereby giving their husbands an op
portunity to experience the "delight'
of remaining at home -without any
other exlteinent than watching the
man In the moon. Large and roomy
apartments were secured at a leading
hotel, and with their downy wearing
apparel carefully concealed under
their arm, the four sallied forth from
tholr "once happy homes" turned
the key in the lock and waved good
bye to the empty homes, Something
lold the four young husbands that
It was time to dlspoi-Be, the hour had
grown lato and, possibly, their wives
may be wondering what was keening
them away from home so long. So
thoy emerged --- shuffled from their
quiet apartments and wendod
their way to their respective domi
ciles, brimful of excuses and explan
ations. But tholr "birds" had flown,
the house was cold and gloomy. Not
a sound could be heard from any
nook nnd corner. Nothing but gloom
and despair greeted their entrance to
what only a few hours before had
been a paradiso but they finally de
cided to rotiro.
A happy reunion took place at an
early hour In the morning when, the
"missing wives "showed up In time
to prepare breakfast for the un-
thoughtful husbands and there will
be no more late hours for these
"youngsters."
