Toll calls will be divided into two
groups -"station to Btation' calls,
where the person calls only for a
number and not for a specific person;
and "person to person" calls, where
the person asks for some particular
party. The rate for the latter service)
is one-fourth greater than the sta
tion to station" call rate which 1b I

between toll points and is computed
on the basis of 6c for each 6 miles, j
up to-24 miles, and 5c for each 8

HAVE BIG PART IN
MING THE WAR
After war was declared the United
States government started to manu
facture tho type of heavy artillery
used by the French. The guns were
called the 15B mlllmeter howitzer
and the 155 Millimeter Filloux rifle.
They 'had never beforo been manu
factured in America. A certain re
coil or recuperating apparatus was
required for these guns, but this
mechanism had never been built
hero. The problem involved the gi
gantic task of constructing a special
plant and the designing and' malting
of special machinery and tools, with
the greatest possible speed. Pershing
badly needed guns as well as men.
The seemingly impossible must be
accomplished. ' '
Dodge Brothers advised the war
department that their resources were
at the government's disposal when
ever needed. The government offi
cials came to them with their pro
blem. After a hurried trip for the
purpose of inspecting the French ap
paratus in operation, Messrs. John F.

ttmt Horace E. Dodge advised Wash
ington that they wouldundertake the
'project provided the government had
sufficient confidence in their ability
to permit them to. manufacture the
mechanism in their own way.
On Saturday, October 7. 1917, of
ficial word was received that their
proposnl had been accepted in its en
tirety. The machinery of Dodge Brothers'
great organization was set la motion
and by Monday night representatives
of the city water board, the depart
ment of public works and the street
railway company were on the propos
ed' building site; arranging for wa
ter, sewers and carlines. Before day
break a spur track laid, and carloads
of building material were already on
the way to the vacant (property. In
a few hours it had been transformed
from an unplowed field to a veritable
babel of laborers, concrete mixers,
steam shovels, cranes, switch engines,
etc. The concrete and all-steel build
ing 600x800 feet, covering an area of
11 acres began to take form. 1
The Monday after the government
contract was approved, Dodge Bro
thers had' the Bethlehem Steel Com
pany on the long distance' telephone.
Thursday those great shops began to
roll steel for this new ordnance plant.
Construction went on like magic.
Within 30 days all excavations were
completed and a concrete flooring
covered the entire 1 1 acres.
Machinery was being gathered from
every available source. Some had to
be built, it was impossible to buy
any on the market. Dodge Brothers
automobile works were utilized. One
hundred and twenty-nine special ma
chines were designed by Dod'ge Bro
thers and .built in their motor car
plants. A train of special machinery
consigned to the Russian government
was caught at the docks and turned
back to Detroit.
The recoil apparatus itself Is a fine
example of careful manufacturing. It
Is known as the hydraulic pneumatic
type and its functions is to prevent
the gun from tearing itself to pieces
as It fires. As. the barrel of the gun
t-ecoils, this apparatus checks the
backward movement gradually, and
automatically returns the barrel of
the gun to its original position. With
the gun placed at an angle of 45
degrees, this aparatus returns the
'uarrcl to its original position in 13
3econds. This is a 'vital 'part, be
cause accuracy and rapid' firing are
the tests of heavy artillery efficiency.
Each recoil is made from a solid
billet of steel. The rifle billet re
ceived from the rolling mills weighs
7800 pounds and Is 7 feet 9 inches
long, by 27 inches wide byi 3ft inches
high. Finished and assembled, this
weighs 3150 pounds. The howitzer
:lllet weighs 3875 pounds. These
massive pieces of mechanism must be
made with great care. Each cylinder
Is bored and ground' and lapped to
the degree of fineness customary only
in the most delicate Instruments.
.Many of these guns have thunder
ed away on the western front. Dodge
Brothers feel gratified that they were
able to place their resources, which
were of great aid in bringing this
conflict to a successful close, at the
government's disposal.
