UNITED WAR FUND
SURE THE NEEDED
Even End of Hostilities Would
Not Change This.
Though the war should cease Im
mediately It Ib said that every cent of
the $170,600,000 souKht iu the United
War Work campaign In the United
States, for the seven approved organ
izations ministering to the American
fighters, will be needed just the same.
This Is the word of leaders ot the
fund-raising campaign and their ex
planation is easily comprehended. In
the first place, It has been officially
estimated that 18 months to two years
must elapse before all the American
boys can be returned from foreign
soil. There are the men of many other
countries to be transported home when
the war ends, so the number of boats
tor use of the Yankees will be limited.
Then there Is also the fact that thou
sands must remain so long as the great
properties and stores of tho United
States have not ben disposed of or
returned.
Immediate cessation of war activi
ties in Europe would plainly create
grave problems connected with the
care of the men. t. Remove the great
motive which actuates every man at
the front today and throw him into
dull Inactivity, with nothing much to
do but await his chance to return to
home and loved ones, and the work of
keeping him cheerful increases in mag
nitude. The soldier welfare organiza
tions foresee all phases ot this grave
contingency. They foresee how great
would be the need for reading matter,
entertainments, amusements, recrea
tion and the cheery personal touch.
PERSHING WARNS OF GERMAN
PUBLICITY
Germany's efforts to Involve the
United States and her Allies into a
consideration of peace terms and an
armistice did not impress jameB F.
Pershing, brother of General Pershing,
as being sincere and designed to give
the world what It Is praying for. Mr.
Pershing, who was In Oregon recently
in the interest of the United War Work
drive, which openB November 11, cau
tioned the American people against
the too-common tendency to become
apathetic under the idea that peace
and the cessation ot hostilities are at
hand.
"When heaven Is. ready to negotiate
with t hell," he declared, "then will
America be ready to make peace wltb
Germany." He told of the great work
being done in Europe by the V. M. C.
A., KnlghtB of Columbus, Salvation
Army and other agencies, and called
on Americans to respond liberally in
supporting the campaign about to open
for raising money with which to carry
on these activities.
GENERAL PERSHING MODEST MAN
"AH that General Pershing wants
now Is the success of the American
boys In France, and to avoid, so far
as possible, any glory for himself,"
declared James F. Pershing, brother
of America's leader in the field, in an
addresB delivered in Portland recently
In behalf of the United War Work
drive, which opens November 11. The
speaker paid a tribute to the men In
the ranks, and gave his audience an
idea of the high esteem in which the
boys are held by their commander.
He showed the Importance of war
work In this country as an imperative
necessity to the victory of the Allies
in the battles for Democracy, and
urged that no dimunltion In speed be
allowed to result through recent peace
proposals. Unqualified indorsement
of the United War Work drive was
voiced by Mr. Pershing who is one of
the leading authorities on conditions
now existing along the battlefront,
and he was especially deBlrous that
there be no relaxation of efforts In
behalf of the several war work funds.

"CARRY ON," IS OFFICIAL
CRY
The caution lBsued recently In
I Portland by James F. Pershing,
I brother of General Pershing,

, messages Issued by departmental
; heads in Washington, D. C,
! copies of which were sent to
i Executive Secretary John Kol
lock, of the Oregon State Council
k of Defense, "Carry on" Is the
theme of those telegrams, whose

i proposals might Interfere with
I campaign plans Just formulated.
Consequently, the United War
Work drive, which opens Novem

even more vigor than had Ger

tions participating in the drive,
even after hostilities have ceased.

ARCHANGEL, Sept. 30. (Cor

Maria Butchkareff, organizer of the
famous Russian Woman's Ba'tallion,
is here aiding the organization of
a Rmsso-AUied army. She has caus
ed! hte following proclamation to be
posted in village squares and in the
country churches:
"I am a Russian peasant and a
soldier. At the request of the sol
diers and peasants I went to America
and Great Britain in order to re
quest these countries for military
help for Russia. The allies under
stand our own' misfortunes and I
return with the allied armies which
came only for the purpose of help
ing to chase out our deadly enemies,
tho Germans, and not to interfere
with out internal affairs. After the
war is over the allied troops will
leave Russian soil.
I, on my own part, request all
loyal free sons of Russia without
reference to party to come together,
acting as one with the allied forces,
who under the Russian Hag have
come to free Russia from the Ger
man yoke and in order to help the
new free Russian army with all
forces, including Russian, to beat
the enemy.
"Soldiers and Peasants: Remem
ber that only a full clean swoep or
the Germans from our soil can give
you free Russia as you long for."
