THE LEAST OK THESE. .
. It Is not the support of a nation
buying billions or dollars' worth of
liberty bonds, breaking bottlos over
tbe sterns or new ships, knitting
socks or cheering us In the movies
that brings home to us the magnitude
or our trust, says the Stars and
Stripes.
It Is all fine, but It is all too big
for any one man of us to grasp. Bui
we appreciate how great our trust
is when we hear that the folks have
had two pounds of sugar In six
weeks, that the lady next door let
her bread burn In the excitement of
listening to our last letter, and that
the lady next door to her is working
in an office and keeping the children
In school while her husband is over
here. .
And then an Incident like the fol
lowing, received by an officer In
France from his wife In America,
comes along and clinches that trust:
"We have a poor district. All the
people are' or the laboring class; the
women mostly do day's work. It has
been wonderful how they've all want-
edl to give to the Red Cross. ' Most of
them are all ready and go to aomo
nook and bring mil two or three dol
lars (three even gave 25 cents each),
and say the? want to help even
though it is so little they can give.
They all say they want to help take
care or the boys over there, that It's
the least they can do. One woman
who has live children and does wash
ing at homo cave us one dollar, and
said she wished It was a hundrod, but
her husband had been In the hospital
for six weeks and she had a hurd
tlhie getting along."
