"This is a hell of a time to strike in America," says the Salt Lake Tele gram. These are the words of an American eoldder in France, who has Just received the Croix de Guerre und a silver star for risking his life to save that of a wounded French of ficer, when told of labor troubles in certain mills and factories in the United States. When this man, who is Jeopardizing life and limb twenty- four hours a day and Bevon days a -week for little more than a dollar a day In money, says "This is a hell of a time to strike," he expresses the Indignation which every man in the United States army, navy or marines feels at the Idea of halting the war for higher wages. Yet It is evldont, both In thiB country and in England; that there is a certain labor element that thinks "it is a holl of a good time to strike." Clearly one of these viows Is the selfish and unpatriotic vlow and the other is tho unselfish and patriotic view. E HARVEST IS IN FULL BLAST That the prune crop will add ma terlally to the coffers of residents of this county is evidenced by activity in that industry on all sides at the pres ent time. A trip to the country dis tricts surrounding Roseburg in any direction will find busy crews at the various dryers and the many or chards of the valley. "While pickers and other helpers in the orchards and dryers are still in great demand, it is not thought that many of the grow ers will suffer to any great extent from shortage of labor. The crop this year is good, and the quality of the fruit is excellent. A visit to the Drager packing house, in this city, discloses a scene of ut most activity, with an immense quan tity of prunes in evidence everywhere. The fruit Is rlpenlne exceptionally early this year, and the Drager plant has already begun "grading" their stock of fruit, which is the earliest this work has ever been commenced. Mr. Drager stated to a News repre sentative last evening that his com pany would handle some where in the neighborhood of 25 cars of prunes from Douglas county growers dur ing the present month, which Is cer tainly "going some." The destruction of the Sutherlin everfresh plant by Are recently Is causing a large quantity of prunes to he brought to Roseburg, which wquld otherwise have been taken to that place.
