Perkins Building of the Home . J. Wl. FLETCHER PASSES AM AUG. 31 Mrs. Dora May Fletcher passed away at her home In this city Satur day, August 31, 1918, at four o'clock In the afternoon. Tie deceased at tine time of her death was 61 years, one month and 16 days of age. She was born at Alder Gulch, Mont., July 15, 1807, and came to tills city when she was six years old, and on September 21, 1884, was married to J. M. Fletcher, there being six chil dren born to their union. The de ceased is survived by iher mother, Mrs. E-lmlra J. Grisdale; her hus band, James M. Fletcher, and three children, James M. Fletcher, Jr., who Is serving Ms country in Prance; Thomas F. Fletcher, of St. Johns, Ore., and Harry W. Fletcher, of this city. Mrs. Flotcher Jindl been a) resi dent of this county for 46 years, and waB a prominent member of the rcobekah lodge, navlng been a sister of that order for over 20 years. The funeral was held at the Roseburg Undertaking Parlors Monday, Sep tember 2. at two -p. m., under the auspices of the Rebekah lodge, the sermon being preached by Rev. C. H. P. TAKES REED COLLEGE PORTLAND, Sept. 2. Reed col lege has today signed a provisional contract with the war department for organizing a unit of the United States army on tho campus In Port land, on October 1. High school graduates, 18 years of age or over, miay be voluntarily inducted Into the Red unit of the student army train ing corps, have all their expenses for tuition, quarters, subsistence, uni forms aiul equipment paid by the government, and thirty dollars a monUh In addition, The military in struction will be iu charge of United States army officers, both commis sioned and non-commissioned. They will be assisted by sixteen teachers and students of Reed college who are now taking special training for the purpose at the Presidio in California. The college will begin construc tion at once of the necessary bar racks. The work will be rushed to completion before October 1 by the enlisted men who tore now taking special training as carpenters and technicians at the Benson Polytech nic school in Portland'. ThlB will give them tho practical experience of constructing, according to army specifications, the precise types of buildings which they will later erect at army cantonments. t The entire Reed college course of study for men has been made over to meet tv needs. Course of study form has been made overs to meet war. needa Courses have been ar ranged in field engineering, war mathematics, radio work, signal corps work, surveying, topographical work, , bacteriology, chemistry, ac counting, French for army uses, psychology for mental tests, and other direct applications to military needs. The courses are described in Reed Record No. 31. The war department announces that about 90,000 new officers will be needled for the army and navy within one year. The main purpose of tho S. A. T. C. is to provldo In tensive special training for men who give promise of making good officers. The college has been selected by the war department as a musical center. A maximum of 400 men will bo given trainting In and. work under the di rection of H. L. Beard, director of the cadet band, which has mode an excellent record. The course will be Intensive and probably -will continue for three months. The men will be selected because of their musical ability and experience Director Beard will be assisted by members of the department of music and others who will be employed. Members of the S. A. T. C. will be given a chance to take band work, and as soon as they qualify will prob ably be eligible for transfer to band positions In the army.
