EACH SOLDIER HIS OWN LAWYER Last summer a young; rosldent of New Jersey, within draft ape and sure, so he believed, to be called he had clulmed no exemption sold all Jiia possessions, closed up his bust ness, and turned everything available into cash. When he got through he had over J 4,600. He put 13.000 of this in a savings bank account and the balance In a checking account. In side of a few months he was on his way to France. Just before he sailed (he drew and signed a multitude of checks on both banks, all to the or der of his wife, each for 1100 and each successive check dated one month later than Its predecessor. He figured' that $100 a month would keep his wife and ah lid very comfortably, and allow a.margln. He didn't want to hand her the $4,500 for fear some- one would get It away from her or she would use It for some unwise venture. And he felt that inside of forty-five months surely he would get back. The first check for $100 was dated the day he left the lael check forty-five months after that. Ho boasted to his friends how clever he was. This is what happonod: The . first check and the second went through all right; by the third month the bank got wind1 of th9 fact that nc had gono to France. Thuy declined to pay any further checks. Now why? Because, In the first place, a bank will not 'honor a check after the death of the drawer. Sec ond, the bank could not know, at any moment that they caBhed one of these checks, that the man was then alive, The wife found herself with a long string of- checks on her bands, all perfeotly good as agalnBt the man'B estate, iperhaps which estate would come to !hor anyway but which practically were of no use because the bank wouldn t honor them. Moral. do not try to scheme -things out for yourseir. Your bank account is the easiest of all your possessions to deal with. For thiB reason in every case your bank, if you toll them what you want, will have you and your wife Blgn the proper forms which they carry in stock for almost any emer gency. Beware of mere powers of at torney. Death revokes them. Plans are now under way, accord- - lng to announcement made by the National Tuhorculosls Association for five great conferences covering tho country In geographical sections from Atlantic to Pacific, to consider practical measures for coping with tuberculosis us a war problem. Start ing In the northwestern statos, thlaH sorieB of gatherings will extend; next to the southwestern group, and then work eastward, taking In the south, the middle Atluntlc section and end ing with 'Now England. MonnB of providing ndequato care for tho thou sands of soldiers and sailors already discharged from the army and navy on account of tuberculosis and the mill groater number rejected In the draft for the same roason will bo one of fahe main questions dismissed. The closely related question of educating the civilian population more fully re garding tuberculosis during the war and thus combatting Its further spread in the community at largo, will also be considered. Not Iobs than 1,000,000 persons In the United Statos, the National Tuberculosis As sociation states, are today nfflleted with this disease, tho animal death toll from which Is upward of 150,000. j Live-wire Doings of City Out for Kurly limit.
