A shameful practice has come to light with regard to the settlement of the affairs of soldiers dying In the service, says the Rogue River Cour ier. In many cases, parents have no sooner learned of their son's death than they receive a notice from some lawyer In Washington, Informing them that they will need legal help in collecting the son's back pay, along with liberty bond rebates and othor claims on the government. The lawyer agrees to look after this busi ness on a fee basis of 20 or 25 per cent, and asks the parents to give him power of attorney. Such service Is absolutely unneces sary, .and no member of the legal profession, excopt a shyster or a . harpy would so misrepresent the sit uation and attempt to prey in this manner upon the bereaved parents. It has been explained! over and over ag&in, in official statements and in newspaper comment, that the gov ernment Itself will attend to all the necessary details without charge. In most cltlas, moreover, there are capable and reputable lawyers, representing their bar associations, who will gladly give free advice on such matters. In case of doubt or delay, they should be consulted. Or if the established machinery does not seem to be working properly, the local congressman can be appealed to. For all ordinary cases the words of Representative Quinne, of Missis sippi apply lltorally and fully: "No lawyer should be allowed to got' one cent of the soldier s back nay or gov ernment insurance as a fee for col lecting It. No soldier, nor the par ents of a soldier or sailor, needs the aid of a lawyer to get his money. The war risk bureau will pay every dime due the beneficiary under the policy. Also, if necessary, every con gressman will aid his constituents In collecting the money." FRJCNCK MOTHER'S liKTTBR. The committoe on public informa tion Issues tho following: Mrs. Wilson permits publication of the following letter as Illustrative of the view point of the mothers of France: Madame Woodrow Wilson, Washington, D. C. Madame: It Is from the mothers and women of France that I send you these words to provo our gratitude for the comforting and brotherly sup port that these young Americans bring us with such noble enthusi asm, who are not afraid of leaving their families, their country, and their hopes to come to our rescue. Alns! I my solf have given my belov ed son to my unhappy and cruelly tried country, and I can understand the pain of those who see their sons go so far, so very far away. Tell them those mothers, those women with tho Bubllme hearts, how near we are to them in thought, and how moved we are at their sacrifice. They aro our sisters through suffering and agniz ing worries and we are brought to. gather through the eamo sorrow, Thnt wo will never forget. It would make me happy, Madame, to corres pond with some of theBe mothers, It tney will send mo a few linos. Very respectfully, Madame, I sa lute you. ' MA DAM 18 M. Lest fallen. you forgot Solssons has HUNS OF TODAY LIKE Boston Transcript: Generally the word "Hun" is supplanting the term "German" as the descriptive appella tion of the people against whom the allied free nations of the world are now at war. If the word continues nt Its present rate of progress In the common speech, it will eventually, In tho mouths of all people outside of what we call Germany, take the place of all other terms. As a matter of llact, the Inexactness and extreme variability of all previous words used to describe the so-cnllod "German" people have long been recognized. They do not call themselves German, oxcept In a very occasional and liter ary way. The term "Gormanus" was first applied to them in a contemptu ous way by one of the Celtic tribes, and was taken up by tho Romans. It was practically unknown to the Gor men themselves. They have. Indeed no racial name. They call them uolveB Deutsch, and their country ueutscnlund; but the word "Doutsch which we render by "Dutch, apply to another people which does not call Itself by that namo, signifies merely "the people." Its use is a relic of the practice among all primitive trioes ana racos of calling themselves "the people," as If there were no others In the world entitled to the name, In view of tho fact that the Ger mans really have not any honestly oarnou or scientifically applied name, the word "Hun" may bo as good for mom as any other. What does signify? This word also has no de- torniluably racial character. It was llrst applied to a horde of savages who, in the fourth century of the UhriBtlan era came Into Europe from Control ABia, and under the com mand of tho fierce chieftain Attilla. began to desolate the Roman empire ana Its colonlos and dependencies, They were In truth a racially mixed lot, a gathering up of precious ras cals from, many sources. Tholr war fare was massacre, cnelr god was force, their discipline wsb mutilation Thoy sought tbe world's hate rather than Its blessing. Bought off, or wcukoncd by dissipation, or attracted olsewhore, they scourged and mur aerou in a Bcutterlng Bort of way until tho 10th century, when thoy or tholr llko came again, under one Arpail, this time to stay. Thoy established themselves on the Dnnube, In what was then Aioravla, and have been there over since. In deed, they extended their ravages to Italy and even to Lorraine, and was then that the Emperor Otto pro claimed thorn "the enemies of God and humanity." He refused to re colvo tholr ambassndorB, becauBO thoy did nothing but lie; and he led lSurope victoriously against them near AugBburg, In 055, putting to denth all their army excopt seven mon, who wore sold Into Blavery. x.ut the Huns remained on the Dan ube whoncc, In the persons of the Hungarians, they come forth once moro, tindor tho lend of one worse than Attilla or Arpnd. as the enemies of God and humanity, Why do wo call the old Huns' suc cessors, tho self-styled Deutsch Huns today? Because thoy adopt tho savago , warfare, the relentloss cruelty, tho Insolence of bnrburlty of tho ancient Huns; because their ambassadors doal In lies, and their rulers refuse to keep their agree- monts; because they despise liberty and justice, and seek to destroy all that tho world haB stored up of the fruits of civilization. At 11 ist the term "Hun" was applied to them in pure CONSERVATION STORE r - --, , rrrm Ready The NEW FALL GOODS Are Coming In NOW is a good time to buy the Winter and Fall Underwear. . The term has been abundant ly earned. It Is as simple as It is true, and as true as It Is simple. UNCLE SAM NEEDS L Necessity for the conservation of clothing and textiles as a war meas ure because of the scarcity of wool and linen, the Increased demands for all textiles, and the advanced prices, is empahslzed by Miss Helen Lee Da vis, professor of household arts in the Oregon Agricultural College. "Since the outbreak of the wor," says Miss Davis, "the wool situation has become alarmingly serious. The United States has been accustomed to import from British sources much of the wool usod In manufacturing here. England now needs all the wool she can obtain to meet the de mands of her armies and her people. She has even established wool re claiming factories in the war zone to which all the uniforms and wool materials of any description gathered from devastated territory are taken, Those garments that can be cleaned nnd remodoled are used again. Oth ei's are ground up, a little new wool added and new uniforms and Man kots manufactured. Germany keeps track of every bit of wool In that country by refusing to sell any new garments or material until the gar ment or article which it is to replace Is turned' over to the government to be remaniifnctured.
