son, formerly of Grants PasB, aud an

Ing the state as federal poultry hus-:
bandiman. He Is Investigating all
the large poultry centers of the val

"It Is costing the fanners of Ore-'
gon about $300,000 yearly because
of faulty method of producing and
handling, the present egg supply.
A large part of the loss Is occasioned
by tho production of fertile eggs
during the warm months. For this
reason the department of agriculture
in conjunction with the Oregon Agri
cultural College has designated the
week beginning June 3 as 'Can the
cockrel week," and a state wide cam

WASHINGTON, May 23. Believ
ing that there can be no great short
age in food products so long as the
liquor interests are allowed to con
sume millions of bushels for manu
facturing , purposes, the dry forces
won another skirmish today when,
on a preliminary vote, the house ap
proved the amendment refusing any
of the eleven million dollars appro
priation In the food production bill
unless the president Issues a procla

In the manufacture of liquors.
L MADE
BREAD BY A BAKER
Through the seizure of a still In
bakery In New Mexico, where a
quantity of alcohol was discovered
that had been distilled from bake
oven fumes, .considerable discussion
has taken place concerning the feasi
bility of manufacturing alcohol as a
by-product of bread.'.-., -
This still was a crudely construct
ed affair, the vapor from the broad
being conducted from the oven Into
a worm, which was cooled by pass
ing through a barrel of water, con
densing the vapor. The baker was
not arrested, as it was clearly shown
that no evasion of the law was In
tended. However; possession of a
still is In violation of the law, and
this one was selzen by the Internal
revenue service. This baker states
that quantities of alcohol can! be
manufactured for w.ir use at a very
small coBt by army bake shops and
bakers in large cities. The practica
bility of the plan, remains to be
worked out.
