Mnnh has been said Blnce this .m.titrv'n nntrance Into the world wide war about men slackers little has haen Bald about women slackers, but they exist, nevertheless. In ev ery community, it is not wjotieu that every woman In the community should devote her entire time and energy to some part In the war pro rrnm , There are many women whom It Is utterly Impossible to even give an hour's time to tneir country. Thov already have too great a load to carry looking after the Immediate Interests of their own family, and ' many mothers not only have their own children to rear ana ciome, urn are really the Important cog In the wheel that furnishes the food for their off-springs. From these motn ers the nation expects no more than ' Ihev are already giving to their own family, fully realizing that they are performing a most patriotic service In first caring and rearing to mnti nnd womanhood those under theii immediate supervision that the coun try may not suffer in after yearn from a race or people wnose pu-reu-tal neglect has stunted them for ac tive service, In one way or the other, to their country. On the other hand) there are many women who seem to think that be cause they have no son serving tne government In any capacity that they should be exempt from doing any work, or assisting In any particular way, to carry on the important pro gram at home to alleviate the suffer ings and make life more bearable for the boys who stand on foreign soil against the onslaught of the en emy, giving their very life and blood for every man, woman and child that they may be freed from the damn able rule of a Prussian government. To the outpourings of these women there Is but one answer. YOU ARE A SLACKER! The woman who holds this narrow and unpatriotic view In reference to the home work to be done for our soldiers bears a cloBe resemblance to a "BolBhevikl patriot." The faot thai Bhe has not a son in this great con flict is the very fact that she should be all the more a willing and faith ful worker if you cannot give your own flesh and blood, surely it Is a very common use that you may direct your talent toward helping the " mothers who already have sons fighting for YOU giving tholr 'young manhood that YOU, A SLACK ER, may enjoy the frultB of ever lasting peace and the freedom won by the blood and flesh of another. Right here In Roseburg there is a small army of women who aro giv ing every moment of their spare time to the Red Cross work carried on nt the headquarters i in the Porklns building, lunder the able manage ment and direction of a patriotic woman who is practically devoting her entire time andl attention to the work and Bhe has no son serving In thlB presont war, either. With her the spirit Is Bhown that if you cnn- . not give of your own flesh it is a small consideration to lend every possible moment of your spare time in the patriotic work that must bo carried on with much rapidity Just so long as this conflict continues. To these willing workers there Is sus pended a spirit of faithfulness and love of their country, for some other mother's boy, that his battle may not be one of acute sufforing for the necessary supplies from the women workers at home. But, there are women, right In Roseburg you don't have to go outside of the city limits to find them 'who could give half of tholr time to Red Cross work and oilier branches of the government program for the benefit of the soldlora and the nation generally and then have eight hours loft oach day to moot the retiutsitleB of their personal af fairs. But are they doing it? The Kedl Cross rooms In this city do not show that there Is a surplus of workers. Instead room could bo made Sterling Character Upon the character and conservatism of your bank's officers and directors to a great extent depends the safety of your 'funds. If they aro known as men of high Integrity If they have a record as successful men in business If they are known as conservative men In all things then you may rest assured that their bank Is gov : erned in conformance with a policy of safety before everything else. Such are the men who govern this bank and your funds are abso lutely secure in' their care. . ; -i The UMPQUA VALLEY BANK B. W. Strong, President; J. Throne, Cashier; D. R. Shambroolf, Vice President; Roland Agee, Vice President. fr-.uuuarji.r i-H-r ------- ---------- -- -- -- .- -- -- ---.----.- - . ...... . for many more willing hands, and if the proper and patriotic spirit were rightfully shown in Roseburg two commodious rooms In the Perkins building would not bo sufficiently large to accommodate half the num ber that should be Justly taking an active part In this important work.: . The theory "that you have no son in this war and that the work of furnishing supplies should be car ried out by those who have boys at the front" Is about as cheap an ex cuse as has so far been advanced for relieving the slackers from doing their part. This is YOUR war, Just as much as that of the mother who has given a son, and the reason that you have no Bon to give Is all the more reason you should use your hands andl brains In helping to carry on this great con flict for the safety of the American people. The home slacker is the host rep resentative tne kaiser has in this free and unshackeled nation. Come out of It put your efforts where they will redound to the good of your own blood.
