H. P. Official Visits.
J. H. Dyer, assistant general man
ager of the Southern 'Pacific Co., who
arrived in this city last night in his
private car attahced to train No. 16,
left this morning for points north.
To Visit Sister.
Mrs. Ben Lohr, wife of the well
known Southern Pacific fireman, left
this morning; for Silverton to visit
for the next two weeks with her sis
ter, Mrs. C. E. Ross, who resides at
that place.
Inspecting Nursery Stock.
County Fruit Inspector Earl
Pearcy has been in the north end of
the county tor the past few days in
specting nursery stock. Mr. Pearcy
is expected to return to this city to
morrow or' next day.
Jjeiive for Eugene.
Air. and Mrs. A. Berneker and fam
ily, recent arrivals In this city left
:his morning for a short visit at Eu
gene at the conclusion of which they
will return to Roseburg and will
probably remain here permanently.
VIose Rice Suffering from Mumps.
Mose Rice, a prominent real estate
dealer of this city, is confined to his
home with a bad case of mumps to
day and according to the attenting
physician it will be several days be
fore he will be completely recovered.
Notice Knitters.
The Girls National Honor Guard
organization recently procured a
large shipment of regulation yarn for
knitting sweaters and helmets for the
soldier boys at Fort Stephens, As
toria, Fort Columbia and Fort Can
by, and will be very glad to get aid
from knitters throughout the city in
making these articles for the boys.
Miss Helen Guest, of the Model bak
ery, will supply the demands for
yarn. ,
Kile Inventory.
E. L. Parrott, A. G. Sutherland
and Joseph Micelll, duly appointed
appraisers of the estate of Lewis
Johnson, deceased, have filed at the
office of the county clerk, notice of
inventory and appraisement in the
above estate, showing that real prop
erty to the probable value of $1000
has come Into their hands to be adjudicated.
To Attend Funeral.
Mrs. A. S. Ireland, of Olalla, left
this morning for Gardiner to attend
the funeral of her father, W. A. Fra
ter, who succumbed at that place
early yesterday morning at the home
of his daughter, Mrs. L. A. Black
well. The funeral services are to
be held tomorrow afternoon and in
terment will follow in the Gardiner
cemetery.
Examinees Return.
W. Waggoner, Chas. Vollman,
Alured Walker and H. Hudson, of
Reedsport and! Floyd Levens, of Elk
ton, who were cited to appear here
yesterday by the local censors to un
dergo the physical test left this morn
ing for their respective homes. It is
understood that two of tnese recruits
I ailed1 to meet the requirements of
the army standards ana consequent
ly are exempt from military duty.
Pay Own Transportation.
All Douglas county registrants
who are from time to time summon
ed before the local examining board
to undergo the physical test are re
quired to" pay their own transporta
tion and expenses to and from this
city, it was learned today. Registrant
recruits who reside In remote dis
tricts are put to a heavy expense. It
is estimated that men of the first
division who appeared here yester
day from Gardiner were out about
$20 each in making the trip to and
from their homes.
Sutlierlin vs. Roseburg Tonight.
The Roseburg high school boys
and girls basket ball teams and. the
aggregations from Sutherlln will
combat on the local high school gym
floor this evening, the first game
starting at 7:30. A ticket selling
campaign and rally were featured
this afternoon and a great deal of
enthusiasm is being shown over the
contests. A large crowd of vooters
is expected to attend from Sutherlln
and. because of the keen rivalry be
tween the basket ball teams of Suth
erlin and Roseburg, a splendid game
Is anticipated.
Rids Advertised For.
According to Information receiv
ed in this city this morning bids are
soon to be advertised for, for the
erection of the second Pacific high
way bridge to be constructed on the
route of the Roberts mountain cut
off. The Portland Bridge Co. was
awarded the-contract for the first
bridge which is to be erected a short
distance in a southerly direction1
from Winstons. This strip of the
highway which eliminates the dan
gerous grades (of the famous Roberts
mountain will not, in all probability.
be ready for use next summer, as has
been predicted.
Tropical Melrose
. Mrs. H. R. Green, who Is taking
care of the ranch home some four
miles southwest of Melrose, whilu
Mr. Green is at work In the ship
yards at Portland, writes The Nev-3
that there has been no real killing
frost at their place this winter. In
proof of the statement the lady for
warded a small section of a red
raspberry bush, whereon were sov
eral dozen ripe berries. Not only
have : raspberries ripened at the
Green homestead, but nasturtiums,
marigolds, carnations andi petunias
are blooming right along. Such
conditions would certainly appeal to
people of the frozen east.
Ranch Cluuigcs Hands.
Quite an Important real estate deal
was consummated here yesterday by
the well known firm of Rice & nice,
when the b acre ranch of J. E.
Pickens, located about 10 miles
from this city on Deer creek, was
sold to G. W. Howard, a recent ar
rival from Hornbrook, Calif. The
consideration was not made public.
The new owner, it is understood,
took possession of his new acquisi
tion this morning, and contemplates
making some extensive improvements
on the place in the near future.
Monday Luncheon Club.
The Monday Luncheon club met
yesterday at 1 o'clock at the home
of Mrs. C. S. Helnline and a very
pleasant time was enjoyed. The
luncheon table was beautifully adorn
ed with red carnations and covers
were- placed for Mrs. B. W. Bates,
Mrs. W. H. Fisher, Mrs. Win. Bell,
Mrs. Tom Wharton, Mrs. J. E. Ea
ger, Mrs. W. Hughes. Mrs. Paul Bu
bar, and the hostess, Mrs. Helnline,

Ollir Barker Writes Homo.
Clifford Barker, son of Mr. and
Mrs. J. F. Barker, of this city, who
recently went ' with his company
from .Vancouver, Wash., to Camp
Greene, Charlotte, North Carolina,
has written home.about his trip. This
Roseburg boy is a member of the
4th United States engineers, and the
very fact of the contingent being or
dered to Camp Greene '.s evidence
that the war department expects
soon to order the 4 th engineers to
sail for France. No Intimation has
been given of this, however, hut like
all others the men in this detach
ment of the army are expecting to go
at no distant day. In comparison
with Roseburg and the Umpqua val
ley, Mr. Barker see3 little in the
south that looks good to him.

morning for Oakland, Ore., where
he has accepted employment., Mr.
Adkins will probably remain at
Oakland for some time.
Mrs. IE. D. Lutz, of Silver Lake,
who has been visiting with friends in
this city, left for Myrtle Creek this
morning where she will remain for a
counle of days, later In the present
week leaving for her home. ..
Mrs. T. O. Campbell, of San Fran
cisco, who has been visiting with rela
tives In this city left 'today for her
home where she will remain for sev
eral weeks, later returning here for
an extended visit.
Creed Chenoweth, a well known
resident of Oakland, Is In the city
today transacting business and visit
ing with friends. Mrs. Chenoweth
accompanied her husband. The visit
ors are making their headquarters
at the Umpqua hotel.
