Frear, who was at Riddle last week

returned to this city Saturday night

Died at Glendale.
The body of John Willis Cox, the
Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. H. IN. Cox,
who succumbed to an acute attack
of pneumonia at Glendule Sunday
afternoon arrived here last night for
burial and Interment will take place
at the Burt' cemetery at 1 o'clock

at the sheriff's office this morning,
Bert Foltz. a Mvrtle Creek hov. who
was sentenced to serve from one to
three years in the Oregon, peniten
tiary, having been convicted June 7,
1916. in the Circuit court here nn n
charge of burglary committed at Rid
dle ano wno was released from the
penal institution after serving the
minimum of the sentence. 1st np-nin
facing a long term in prison, having
been arrested at The Dalles recently
charged with robbery. , . . .
Solders Not Getting Moll.
Numerous complaints have come
to The News today regarding the
failure of soldiers at different forts
and other sections where they are sta
tioned' rrom parents who are unable
to get mail to their sons properly de
livered. Weeks-and weeks pass be
fore letters sent from this city are
delivered and many of them never
reach tuelr destination. Whv this
laxity on the part of officers in charge
or tne man tor tue boys is not fully
understood cut there is no Question

ports that have been in circulation
quite generally in Paris journals to
the effect, that Miss Anita Patton,
daughter , of a wealthy Californlan,
was soon to wed General Pershing,
were denied by the young lady here
today. Miss Patton alleged that no
engagement existed between herself
and General Pershing.

a general observance here today of
the first heatless Monday, Inaugurat
ed by the fuel administration.
EXCITING BASKAET BALL GAME.
Oakland high school and the local
high school girls' and boys' basket
ball teams met on the R, H. S. gym
floor-Saturday evening and played'
two of the most interesting games
ever witnessed In this ' city. . The
girls' game was especially keen, the
Oakland aggregation winning by a
small majority, the score, being 17
to 15. In the boys game the local
team won with ease the score being
54 to -24. However, a great deal of
enthusiasm prevailed and the large
crowd present were kept in jolly hu
mor throughout the match. At the
conclusion of the games the young
people repaired to the Maccabee hall
where one of the largest public dances
of the season was enjoyed.
