vice that it has been aide to com
ply in full with the ropiest of the
war department for a.ssistame in se
curing qualified luiniiei men and lor
esters to serve us oflicers fur the for
est battalions which are to comprise
a pait of the American overseas
forces. Three hundred and nine men
have been recommended lor commis
sions in the grades of major, captain,
first lieutenant, and second lieuten
ant. Of these, two thirds are prac
tical lumbermen or saw mill opera
tors and one third are trained for
esters with Ions woods experience.
Some of the lumbermen who were
recommended have also hail theoret
ical training in forest ry and many
of the foresters have hau experience
In logging or saw milling.
In the selection of qualified lum
bermen the forest service has had
the close co-operation of a sub
committee of the lumber committee
of the Council of National defense
and of fourteen committees of lum
bermen in different parts of the
county. Almost every man selected
was interviewed by a lumbermen's
committee or by the forest sei vice of
ficials. .Many private foresters and
forest schools have assisted in find
ing technical foresters suitable for
commissions, 1 1 oi the men recom
mended have, by success! u! experi
ence, shown themselves capable of
handling some important phase of
lumbering, saw millim:. or technical
forest work, according to oMicials ot
the forest service. All have proved
by experience their qualities of lead
ership and their ability to handle
men in large numbers.

The voters of Multnomah county
will elect only one state senator' next

Herman A. Lewis, of this county,
