The letter contained pictures of the
men's quarters, which are very com
fortable looking Indeed, and of dum
mies, which are used in bayonet prac
tice, and it also uescnuw the train
ing the officers are receiving. The
dummies, which are about the size of
a man, are of two kinds, stationary
ones and Yli6 swinging kind, which
are operated by means oT pulleys and
ropes, the object being in -practice
with either to run the bayonet
through the ring serving as target on
tho dummy.
The officers are l;eing risldly drill
ed in field training and trench war
fare, being Yequired to do actual dig
ging in the 'trench work, the object
being an exact reproduction of a sec
tion of trench, now being used in
France, and will include the firing
trench, communicating trench, rooms
to rest and sleep in, dumps or store
rooms for ammunition and supplies
and cover trenches to be used during
artillery bombardment. Although the
men in training have received their
officers' commissions, they arc be
ing given a very rigid competitive
test. Including such work as has been
described above and those who fail
to nmko good will be aent home.

ARE WANTED AT ONCE
A. T. Lawrence, manager of the
Sunshine ranch this morning tele
phoned The News office stating that
It Is imperative that 100 loganberry
pickers present themselves Monday
at his ranch east of the city in order
that this year's crop will not be a
total loss. Ho stated that at the
present time over one half of the
crop would spoil on the bushes and
he is putting lortn an extra effort to
secure a large number of pickers for
next week. The help shortage has
been the greatest trouble in harvest
ing the loganberry crop and although
during the past few days, a great
deal of additional labor has been se
cured it was not sufficient Co save-tne
beiries from spoiling.
. The drying fs now in progress and
the berries are not picked fast
enough to keep the dryer going. Mr.'
Lawrence is paying the pickers two
cents pet hound which is double the
wages paid In the Willamette valley
for like work.
If this section wishes to have a fea
ture crop, such as loganberries, lanor '
must be secured, so that the growers
