COMFORT
Cook with a good oil stove this
summer does not heat up the
kitchen, yet it roasts, toasts, broils,
bakes, better and quicker than
your regular kitchen range.
No wood, coal or ashes to lug, no
dirt, no lost time waiting for slow
fires. Convenient as gas. No smoke
or odor.
Look for the New Perfection specially-decorated
windows this
week, at the stores listed below.
Then let the merchant explain the

When it comes to matters mili
tary, little Visalia. Cal is not only
patriotic but strictly modern. A
short time ago the recruiting officers
in that, town were informed that a
machine gun company was needed
in a hurry by the Second California
Infantry.
A rapid-fire recruiting campaign
produced tho men in 24 hours and
then a dozen business men of Visa
lia, who own Dodge Brothers motor
cars, offered to set tho new recruits
at tho Presidio at San Francisco in
record time. j
This was the first attempt at mov-
Ing troops long distances by motor;
in the San Joaquin Valley and it ,
was watched with much interest by j
military men.
The U.I 0-mile run was made in 1
eight and one-half hours, with an
average speed of '27 miles an hour, j
The first half of the trip was coin- ;
plete with a 35-mile average, but
rain and slippery roads cut the aver
age to 27 before the ferry at Oakland
was reached.
While the number of men moved
in this particular instance was small,
the run demonstrated that the num
ber of troops it would bo possible
to rush to a given point would de
pend wholly on the nuiiibur of motor
cars available.
The only delay reported on the
entire t rip was occasioned by five
punctures. Tho performance of tho
Dodge Brothers cars aroused high
praise from the officers who accom
panied the recruits on the trip.
